Horological Meandering

I found an AD selling the Speedmaster Moon phase 38765031.

Before I implement the final step I would like to ask you the following:

Is there anything else to consider in this price range besides Omega Speedmaster. This is going to be my first "serious" watch and I have no category requirements, such as diving, measurements etc. The main thing is the look and the legacy. As for the legacy I already know the Speedy is second to none, but still if you have any additional suggestions I would surely appreciate them.

Buying the first "serious watch" is always an exciting and important step, not the least because it will stay with you as an important milestone, whether or not you go on to collect dozens more, or it remains your only watch, accompanying you through life's adventures.

I would hazard to say that the basic Speedmaster Professional is more iconic and historically important than the Speedy Moon, but there is a balance to the dial and colour that is very attractive. It depends a little on your requirements. The other "legacy" watch to me is the Rolex Submariner. Even vintage pieces may be of interest to you, but that's a whole other ballgame.

I'm sure you will get lots of other ideas in this thread. Let us know what you decide on.

Ps. I have edited the street price you quoted. It is acceptable to mention recommended retail prices, but there is so much variation in discounts and other factors across different markets that it makes this information unhelpful. Instead we can focus on the merits of the watches themselves.

I just read your previous post regarding the Omega or the Breitling...

I have to agree with Andrew above and second that push for the Speedmaster Professional.  Its the original chrono that started it all and it hasn't changed much. 

My first serious watch was bought one year out of school.  I didn't know any better and was bound by finances.  I bought the Seamaster Auto.  I still have it today some 15 years later and though I wish I bought the Professional, I love the dial and the sentimental value attached as my first "serious" watch.  I guess what I am trying to say is, this watch will probably stay with you. 

The Professional with its iconic dial is a winner.
