I think it really depends...
For a watch for collecting, I'd say major important characteristics include, but are not limited to, rarity, exclusivity, aesthetic finish (anglage, etc), technical features (regulation system, power reserve, hacking etc) and certainly the brand name
For a watch that is primarily an investment, I believe rarity and exclusivity take the tops spots.
For a watch to wear, durability and serviceability matter...
In the end, all characteristics are important, it just depends on the use of the watch, and the preferences of the owner. But certainly the more beautiful, the more technical, the more exclusive, the more its qualities will transcend categories and be broadly appealing.
A trend in recent years has been to put emphasis on movements that are developed and manufactured in-house. However, this was not always the case. For example, JLC for many years supplied movements to VC, AP, PP etc, and they were and are still very highly regarded.
