Horological Meandering

Kong suggested I might post a few pictures of a new watch - apologies if this isn't up to your normal standards!

The Supermarine 500 is Bremont's first "amphibious" watch. Water-resistant to 500m, it's classically designed, with strong styling and is named after the famous British aircraft manufacturer of the same name. Supermarine's designer, RJ Mitchell was responsible for the Schneider Trophy-winning Supermarine S6-B in 1931 and, of course, the iconic Supermarine Spitfire. The S6-B was the first 'plane to top 400m mph, and can be seen on the caseback.



I'm not sure what exactly influenced the design of the crown guard, but I'd like to think it was the S6-B's air intakes, giving the watch it's aviation, as well as diving, cues.



The rubber strap is cleverly integrated into the case, and wears well. Even the Bremont buckle has been designed to reflect the design of the lugs.



There's an automatic Helium Release Valve, and the watch is made from Bremont's unique Trip-Tick three-piece case. The PVD'd barrel remains, and the lugs appear to have been extended slightly from previous models, with sweeping curves.



There's a 120 click sapphire bezel, and the sapphire glass is, of course, coated in Bremont's usual nine layers of AR.



There are four variations - Blue, Black, Green and Silver, I chose blue to echo the colours of the original S6-B. I hope you like it.

...that's a handsome looking watch and a very interesting summary. It was good of you to take the trouble to bring out a brand we don't get to see enough.

A couple of questions, if you are up for it: first, what is the WR (couldn't pick it from the dial)? Yours is numbered; are these from a limited edition? Finally, whilst you mention that they are available in four colours and that you chose blue, that first photo discloses no blue at all. Does the colour only show in the lume (the black should be interesting!) ?

The WR is 500m, hence the name! I've seen some of their test results, and it appears to be good down to 147ATM. I doubt I'll ever take it below 147 feet, to be honest!

The dial and lume are blue, as is the strap. Apologies for the poor quality of the photos - late night, artificial lighting and high ISO. Not a good mix!

....I actually prefer that in the lume shot to the daylight ones. The dial becomes less fussy and the lume on the bezel looks excellent.

One question. How does the crown at 2 o'clock feel against your wrist (or most precisely, the tip of your ulna). I've got large dive watches with crowns at 4 o'clock and they do a great job of avoiding digging into your wrist. Plus they are easy to get at. The 2 o'clock position seems like it may dig into the ulna - your experience?

...but it's survived two week's of desk-diving with no ulna-related injuries! It's very comfortable - although not a small watch, by any means. 43mm across, not including the crown. 14-15mm high. I've not tested it underwater yet, but hoping to take it freediving in the New Year. Will post my results in early 2010.

I think your photos are great (not sure if that was what you were referring to being not up to "our standards")!   Congrats on the watch!  I think the blue lume is so fun.  It makes me wonder what the other colors are like.  Thanks for sharing with us, and I hope to read more of your posts!
