Horological Meandering

I hesitated to write anything more about the Seiko Discus Burger as it seems that almost all that needs to be said has already been said. But humor me as I share my thoughts.

When I received my Discus, I opened the green box to view a watch that strikingly contrasts its green, cardboard abode. Totally cool looking watch! When you see it in metal, it is easy to see why so many desire to acquire one. The disappearing logo, the rotating disks, the off center clear "time zone", all aspects that exudes an intrigue.

I did find, however, like most reports, the band looking more like synthetic than leather. Instead of leather, I think it looks and feels more like "Pleather". I took a sniff at it but there was no essence of leather. Instead, its essence was more like Eau De Rubber. I have a small wrist but did not find the band to be much of a problem. I usually wear my bands on the last hole but on this watch, it is the fourth to the last. Where the band meets the lugs, though, there was some space between the band and my wrist. Although the space exists, the watch stayed in-place on my wrist and was quite comfortable. No slippage. No turning. Partly due to the Hardlex crystal on the case back that, to me, gripped my skin.

The crown is a little too small. I couldn't "feel" it winding. In fact, I couldn't wind it... almost. Maybe because it is really smooth. Still, I had difficulty in consistently winding it even for two or three turns. I put my ear to it to see if I could hear it. I remembered the part of the Japanese translation that said, "You will enjoy the feel of winding it as it makes a fun “gzzzzzz” sound." Yes, I'd say that gzzzzz is exactly the sound it makes. The buckle is very easy to put on and take off but I have mixed feelings about the metal used.

I have difficulty in telling what time it reads as the discs are rather small and my eye sight... well, I usually use glasses to read. In proper lighting, i am able to read it enough to know if I am late or not... without my glasses.

The concept of the watch had an ecology theme. Aside from the general concept from the Japanese translation that the dark crystal represents the universe, the clear, "pure" circle represents the earth and the green triangles represents us and how we relate to the whole universe, I can find nothing else about the watch that I would apply the word Ecology to. LOL

Don't get me wrong. I am not bashing this watch. This is a very cool watch and I love it. I can see why Graham wore his for three weeks. The translucent crystals front and back and the disappearing, reappearing logo, is a nice fun touch. Not sure if they intended it to be that way as I don't recall translating anything about the logo in that aspect.

I concur with all the other pros/cons threads previously posted.

The anticipation takes me back to my childhood days when I was waiting at Christmas for the Super Spy Kit from Hasbro! I guess we all have a little boy in us!

i hesitate to teach anyone to suck eggs, but i've found a superb way of winding a watch with small crown. instead of trying to wind with thumb and forefinger, i hold it in my left hand, put my right thumb on bottom lugs, put side of right forefinger under the crown and run my finger up and down with slight pressure on the crown. it winds perfectly that way as do other watches with small crowns(except omega constellations with ridiculous flat sided crowns). give it a try.

I'll try that. That is such a simple, and GREAT, solution. Here I was, trying to use just my fingerprints, mostly fingernails, to try and grip it. LOL

Just received my Grand Seiko GMT. Beautiful watch. I'll have to post some pictures of it, soon.

Skeleton and cant afford both. in fact with all the building work going on at home i cant afford anything else until at least April  the only way i can cope with my addiction withdrawal is to buy unusual straps to put on them.

Those home building projects can sure take a chunk out of Ye Old Watch budget. I redid my kitchen a year ago so now, I am able to pick up a few watches here and there.

Saw the Orient line when I was in Japan this past November. Nice watches. And, they've got them in many electronic stores and very inexpensive. But if you go to the major department stores, they have the higher end, Royal Orient watches, that you're looking for. Very nice! I was tempted to pick one up but I was on the hunt for a Campanola Grand Complication. Ended up not getting it, though. With the Yen exchange being 124 to the US dollar at that time, I should've picked up something!

about your medical condition, Graham. I get to travel to Japan about once a year, sometimes twice. I love to get things that you can only get IN Japan. Sometimes, though, it is not that easy even when I am in Japan, be it distance or duration of stay, etc.

I live in Honolulu which is a pretty developed city, but it is in the middle of the Pacific. Hawaii is the most isolated land mass in the world and because of that, watch dealers are few. So if there is a specific model I desire, it is difficult to get and most of the time, it will need to be ordered. Some dealers want a 50% deposit but will not guarantee when they will receive it.

Even last year, when I was enquiring about the Grand Seiko, they didn't know what I was talking about. You should've seen their faces when I was asking about the Discus! LOL

Haven't done the bay thing as i am leery of the sellers and, I wouldn't know which ones I could trust. I'll look to you for some wisdom if ever I go the bay route.

Unbelievable. Only 2 hours by car and never been to England!? Of course, it is not necessarily a bad thing. They must love, or at least, enjoy their lifestyle then.

BTW, it is a beautiful watch. I just love it! What I don't like, though, is the pillow for it. To make the watch fit in the box, it seems like I need to release the deployant to make the straps flat so it can lay down in the box. That little ribbon on the pillow doesn't seem strong enough to hold the watch in place either.

What are your thoughts?
