The original never gets old. Reintroducing the Benrus Type I
With the experience gained through the beginning of the Vietnam War and the increasing use of covert and specialized military teams such as, the US Navy UDT/SEALs, US Navy EOD, US Navy Divers, Army Rangers, Green Berets, and CIA operatives, the Department of Defense determined that these specialists needed a more robust dive watch that would be purpose-built to meet the highest standards of the military and its operatives. As a result, the military wrote Mil-Spec MIL-W-50717, that specified the design details for the BENRUS Type I diving and field watch.

Below is the original version.
The two watches are very much the same design and profile. The reissue Benrus Type I has removable spring bars versus the original which are fixed. Also the bezel is aluminium vs the original which was bakelite.

Of course an original will always be better. But the authentic reissue from benrus turned out very nicely, and I appreciate they worked with hodinkee to broaden the reception. I’ve owned an original for years and always disliked the random internet brands that popped up to create new takes on such a purpose-built design. Regardless how people feel about new-brand ownership, I’m happy that Benrus, as a 21st century organization and company, very much seems to be on the right track.
Benrus type I is an interesting 30atm diver.

I am a big fan of the Benrus release, but more a Type 2 man myself, which i am still looking for btw to join my Adanac and Marathon group. Hard to find one in EU and i wouldnt mind
a damaged or missing bezel or bad crystal as i have some parts already. But a wait while hunting is a good way of passing time
