I've offend wondered with the Lange yesterday and this one today, what was the purpose of a regulator. Was it just a different way of showing the time or did it have a purpose. I understand the Doctors watch where the second hand was predominant in the design for the ease of timing a pulse, but never really understood the regulator design historically.
Regulators were used in marine world in the 17th century. They were highly accurate and used for navigation to calculate the longitude. It clearly separates the hands from overlapping for clear time reading.
