I am the Biggest Fan of Vianney Halter's watchmaking and watches, think of the biggest collector and fan of Vianney you know and double it, that's me π
I have been following Vianney's work for at least 25 years. And the KWH watch in collaboration with Behrens might be his most ambitious watch since his Harry Winston Opus 3 and the Deep Space Tourbillon.
Before we explore the KWH, a sidebar to know a bit more about Behrens.
Behrens was formed in 2012 in the city of Shenzhen, China by Lin Bingqiang & Eric So.
The name βBehrensβ actually refers to Peter Behrens (1868-1940), a German pioneer of industrial design. The founders of the brand identified with his creative philosophy, and named it after him as a tribute.
In an Interview with Europa Star I read an interesting quote by Eric So βAs a Chinese brand, we are not a threat to the watch industry! Quite the contrary, weβre trying to bring more people into the watch market. And we like Swiss watches β Iβve been collecting them for over 40 years myself. My long-held dream was to build a brand with an original creative proposition.β
Mr. Lin Bingqiang counts music, painting, design as well as Martial Arts amongst his many Passions and they act as an inspiration for him. In his interview with theSubdial he shared "Kung Fu is an art that is closely related to other arts. Our designs mostly come from life, capturing creative sources through daily life observations, which is the direction we have been persisting in moving forward.
In martial arts, there is no opponent more worthy than yourself. The rigorous training students dedicate their lives to is not in the pursuit of combat superiority, but in finding balance between their inner and outer worlds. Both of these qualities are present in Kung Fu, the art and the watch."
The Behrens Kung Fu watch was made in collaboration with another watchmaker I admire Quan Guobiao.
The inspiration for the watch came from the common passion and collecting of old electrical meters by Vianney & Lin of all places π
The Watch is Available in White Gold (9pcs), Rosegold (9pcs), Tantalum (90pcs) and Ceramic (90pcs)
The case is 35mm wide and 41mm long. The case is just 10.1mm thick, and it has 30 meters of water resistance.
Has a Manually-wound movement which operates at 4Hz, and features a total of 72 hours of power reserve.
The Movement
According to ablogtowatch the mechanical movement co-developed by Behrens and Vianney Halter, known as the caliber BM06 has 870 components in total, including a chain around the periphery, which is used as the hour indicator.
Behrens even includes a βtemperature compensation featureβ in the chain. Apparently, the system is sensitive enough that temperature changes can affect its operation (without a special system, the chain probably gets stuck due to increased friction). Thus, special materials or engineering provide consistent operation of the hour indicating chain in different wearing environments.
The hour-indicating chain is inspired by the classic video game βSnake.β In the game, a digital snake could only move at angles, similar to how the chain appears to move at right angles, as opposed to in a more circular nature, as one might expect from a chain. Reading the hours takes a bit of a sharp eye. There is a small string of lume-filled segments on the chain, with a slightly larger βheadβ segment, which is where the current hour is read along the also small hour markers. This string of components is the βsnake.β The chain itself is really cool to look at, and you can see the bright red color from the synthetic rubies that make up much of its construction."
The βdialβ of the watch includes two other pieces of information, including the expansive view of the movementβs components and operations. To the right of the dial is an aluminum drum that turns to indicate the current minutes. Opposing it on the left side of the case is another drum that is used as a power reserve indicator. There is also a smaller drum next to it, which serves as an AM/PM day/night indicator with a half black and half white section. The manually-wound movement operates at 4Hz, and features a total of 72 hours of power reserve. The regulation system is displayed in the lower center version of the dial, and above it is the mainspring barrel.
In the rear the exhibition caseback reveals at 12 oβclock a combined moonphase and date disc. You can also see the back sides of the cylinder displays. As a manual winding movement, there is no rotor to obscure the view and the watchβs many jewels. There are a whopping 170 jewels in this calibre.

I kid I kid, That is an awesome looking piece and thank you for the detailed post on it. But tell me that your mind doesn't automatically go to apple watch?
My Pleasure ππ, funnily enough it didn't at all, somehow the Apple Wrist Assistant never registered as a watch to me, but now that you mention it sure π
The Vianney Halter x Massena Lab Old Soul, if you view the design through the lens of Late Steampunk Robotics, the finishing, the movement imo its a Masterpiece, highly underrated and lost in the avalanche of new releases. If you think about it, he has never done a watch like this before.
However, like All Great Chefs, there is a Bistro version where you get all the flavor in a less formal atmosphere. The Louis Erard x Vianney Halter Le Regulateur II Monochrome.
These look so fabulously cool ππ»ππ»ππ»

And Vianney is a truly fun character indeed - remember him having a partially disassembled canard aircraft in his atelier back in the day. Let me see if I can quickly find some pictures of the watchesβ¦
