I love that documentary!just about to watch it again.

The film team did a great job capturing the George Daniels/Rober Smith working relationship.

(Plus I'm lucky enough to have a copy signed by Roger Smith and director David Armstrong - which is extra special)

An incredible well made documentary, it featured the last ever interview with Daniels. One of the things that stood out for me, that I had always underestimated until I saw this, was just how much a truly talented watchmaker Smith was in his own right from a very young age.

I completely agree. It's easy to shrug Roger off as just being George's apprentice but what many don't realise that Roger's been able to pick up and master a lot of the skills in a much shorter time period. His improvements and continual development of the co-axial escapement is no small feat either. I like to think of Roger being a better craftsman whilst George being the mechanical genius.

1) Continuous improvements to the co axial movement
2) Strict adherence to bespoke English tradition of horology
3) training more watchmakers according to the methodology
4) Keen to disseminate knowledge of horological skills (eg his YouTube channel)

5) By all accounts he is a nice unassuming fellow (for all his horological magnificence - I don't believe anyone has ever said this of the late great George Daniels

* Disclaimer: I am a huge admirer or both Roger and George Daniels but sadly lack the $$$ of a minor potentate to own either of their pieces

He continues to work in improvements in the accuracy and function of his movements.

Yes he is a gentle man with an intense desire to preserve the history of British watchmaking and to carry forth George's legacy.

His watches are no less than masterpieces.

I happened to be listening to your podcast when I posted the previous comment. I've listened to that episode a few times now. Truly wonderful.

Actually, I was wondering if you could post a pic of the Daniels last signature on your watchmaking book.
I have several signed Daniels books from I think 1980, 1990s and early 2000s, so would be interested to see if his penmanship had changed in "older age".
(Perhaps this warrants a new thread)

As you can see, I am an enormous admirer of both George and Roger.

I bought this DVD as I had just placed an order for a Roger Smith Series 2 this week. I had not expected much but I thought at least I will know a little more on how Roger makes his watches. How mistaken could I have been! This is a must watch film for anyone who has an interest in watches. I would go as far to say that all purists should one day ensure they watch this film. The fact that the back of my head appeared as a special guest star during the Daniels Sothebys auction is totally irrelevant

The DVD comes with a audio CD of the music used in the background of some parts of the documentary and a number of postcards of George Daniels, Roger Smith and their watches. When I see Roger next, I shall ensure he autographs them
