I know that this maker fell on hard times for a while.   I am a brand new collector and have an opportunity to make a modest purchase of a model from the 70s in excellent condition.   Are UN watches of this era well made and worth owning?   I only buy things I am willing to wear and use.

good question to ask regarding a time piece or a brand, i happen to own a UN and must say its manufacture is of the highest quality and always runs like the saying clock work...  i strongly  rate UN as up there  with the rest      goodluck with your purchase look forward to seeing it soon.

... without checking the piece in question. Fact is, that despite its economic problems, UN never completely ceased to produce high value timepieces. However, the number of these was outweighed by the simpler pieces from time to time, so chances are good to get the latter than than the former. As a general rule, chronographs and calendar complications were made in higher quality. During the late Sixties and early Seventies, there were some interesting watches, albeit rarely with self-produced movements. For example, there were very nice high-beat watches with 36,000 A/h movements made by ETA.

So if you by chance have good pictures of the watch and the movement, help would be easier.

It looks to my untrained eye like there is nothing special about the movement  - and the case is roughly finished (perhaps that is a matter of the style.)  But it is a bit unusual in the category of watches I have been looking at recently - older ladies' mechanical "everyday"  watches that are  not too small.    

This is a great UN diver's model! It is extremely clean from what the pictures shows. I think you'd need lots of luck to run into one of these again.

I would snatch this one up!

... without having own information on the model or its movement. But it has a unique design, which is not so typically bright-and-clunky-Seventies-like, and the movement is well finished. If the watch is working flawlessly, and the price is okay with you, I'd also advise to take it.
