which I randomly came across tonight from a film that I subjectively consider to be the highest form of cinematic expression. I do not think the casting in the film was optimal but ultimately it was not underwhelming either . What matters here most is the way in which the writer and director of the film sees the world and people in it, and this viewpoint will permanently be as idiosyncratic as it can conceivably get with Mr. Michael Mann. Love it or hate it I could not help but share these here........

The location shits and music is amazing.

It seems to me that the film resonates considerably more with European audiences than it does with American! Couldn't help but notice you are writing from France . Cheers, Filip

its at times very simple, reduced scenary, without any bombastic garnish.
Like the killing of the guard in the trailor park.
The guy is hidden in a bush, a simple bush like in anybodies backyard.
Some accompaniying songs in scenes are also more "European style".

A form of, if you will, 'hyper-realism'....

I grew up on the original Miami Vice TV show and the Manhunter movie which later spawned the Hannibal Lecktor movies, but this Vice "reboot" film had none of the 80s feel IMHO.
From the praise here I'll try to re-watch it with fresh eyes.

He is a profoundly philosophical filmmaker where there is a considerable amount of substance beneath the highly polished aesthetic and sparse dialogue. This is done with sheer auteur intent. You have to put your mind to work with this movie in order to glimpse the existential dilemmas addressed within. I personally do not think of it as any lesser in substance than the brilliant TV series or his trademark features like Manhunter, Last of the Mohicans, Heat and so on. It helps to read some philosophy beforehand which you can find here as well in TimeOut . Cheers, Filip

I am honestly slightly surprised a decent number of people here really appreciate this movie but perhaps I shouldn't be. It is after all a hyper-rare place online which I chose to call home as well . As I mentioned, thus far most of the positive commentary is coming from members outside the U.S. .... Cheers, Filip

living in LA, I did not encounter any notable number of people who would have a positive reaction to me mentioning this was one of my favorite movies of all time!! As a matter of fact I cannot recall even a single person telling me something particularly positive about their experience with watching this film! I think among those who have seen it a large percentage expected something quite different to what the film is actually like and were turned off of it as a result.... I went into it with a totally open mind and came out of it with my mind genuinely blown by how astonishing the movie is to my eyes. Cheers, Filip

As much as I enjoy and appreciate still photography, if the cinematography is done right there is almost nothing better...

Miami Vice  (2006) - Cinematography by Dion Beebe ... best known for his collaboration with Rob Marshall in the films Chicago (2002), Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Nine (2009), Into the Woods (2014) and Mary Poppins Returns (2018).  He worked with Michael Mann in Collateral (2004) and Miami Vice (2006). For his work on Memoirs of a Geisha he won an Oscar for best achievement in cinematography.

"Heat" (1995), also written by Michael Mann / Cinematography by Dante Spinotti, is on my short list of favorite movies...

I have not seen (Chicago, Nine, Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns) so I will have to check them out and then 'Memoirs of a Geisha' I saw when it came out a dozen years ago so it is well overdue for another viewing. 'Heat' probably remains Mann's best work in a more traditional film-making sense. Where cinematography and script are integrated in a formal enough manner (despite still being daring for the use of digital imagery and negative space) so to be more easily comprehended by a large percentage of the audience. From 'Collateral' onward is when he really went into more visually abstract and subtext-based philosophy. Mr. Spinotti is alongside Mr. Beebe my favorite DP due to their collaborations with Mann. He has also done 'Public Enemies' with Mann. Cheers, Filip

I didn’t think much of it as I find all those remakes or ‘based-upons’ the ultimate proof of lacking imagination. So that was the vibe I had when I started the movie (nothing else on tv so what the hell)....but I was pleasantly surprised. Very entertaining and beautifully shot.

Nevertheless the original Miami Vice series that changed Miami itself can’t be beaten. But if you separate the show from the movie in thought the movie most certainly can stand on its own.

It was a different era, and I needed the money, and they offered me the job ... I even got to drive the car we used as the subject for the conversion manual (a piece of crap).
