Land of the dragons.
With land and real estate being such a precious commodity in HK, why the gaping hole in buildings?
Simple : Feng Shui
It allows dragons to pass through unimpeded from the mountains to the sea, thus creating a natural air flow through the city and good Feng Shui.

It does not only work for dragons: very sympathetic design and utterly Eastern. Bravo!
I may also add...
It has to do with the plot ratio as well. E.g. For a certain area of land you can only build a certain amount of sellable area. If you fill up the hole, that means the overall building will be much shorter; with a great big hole in the design, you can build a much taller building. Since the higher the floor number is, the pricier the flat will be per square feet (for better view, less traffic noise and general superiority) most property developers in Hong Kong has the incentive to build taller apartments in order to maximise their profit. Hope that add a rational view of the great big holes you often see in Hong Kong's residential buildings.

impressive building and interesting background story...
It certainly seems like the building is optimized for the owners view... Not sure I would want to live on the higher floors but it must be breath taking to look out over the surrounding area.
I also like the photo presentation, clouds, color, etc... on my browser there are artifacts or patterning along the building edges which is a little distracting. As far as I can gather nothing to do with dragons flowing through the city...
