Patek Philippe

What to add.

 By: geross : April 28th, 2015-03:00
May a suggest a nautilus , an ellipse in yellow gold.
The nautilus , the 38mm model. The one previous to the new
model 5711a. As you have a chrono & world time , perhaps you
need playboy watches of patek both a nautilus and ellipse.

Cheers!

Ellipse...yes, I think that is a real possibility....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 28th, 2015-03:05
.......I think they are iconic and have a really nice look on the wrist.

Nauty is not for me. I know I am in a very small minority, but the watch doesn't appeal to me.

Yes, Geross, I have mentioned the possibility of a vintage Ellipse before. I think that is a nice addition.

Vintage ellipse with cal 215 ps would be nice.

 By: geross : April 28th, 2015-04:00
Get the one with eccentric seconds on the right side.
White gold railroad black dial. I forgot the ref but saw
it in bangkok , really nice. My opinion my suggestion.

Cheers!

If you get a picture of it, please post....

.....so many Ellipse styles to go for. I would need to go vintage

"Playboy watches"

 By: Tonypatch : April 28th, 2015-05:34
Indeed, and a 928 to go along with it. Preferably with Pasha seats.

That's a tough one

I like your vertical/horizontal thing Joe smile

I think I prefer the vertical collecting even if, in the end, it is the sensation I have in owning a watch that preveils, no matter the fact I may have a close looking watch already.

I guess you would like to remain in a more reasonable price budget so I won't mention 3970 or 5970.

You don't like the Nautilus either (I didn't at the beginning but when I tried it on... it was love at first "try"), which would have been my proposition.

So, if upper budget:

I saw the 3940 lately and it was thin, very elegant and beautiful. This QP model (or the 5140) was not my favorite Patek one. But seeing it in the metal was quite an interesting experience.

It was all Patek's elegance and noble look, with a very nice complication you don't seem to have already and it won't directly compete with your existing watches.

If lower budget:

If you like "Clous de Paris" bezel decoration, I like the  5115 (enamel dial 35mm, cla 215) / 5117 (no enamel, auto) or the manual 5116 (5119 with enamel dial).

I forgot the Gondolo! I wasn't a square watch fan but the 5200 or 5124 are beautiful, original and I would very well see one on my wrist everyday.

I'm curious to see what you'll be choosing in the end.

Cheers, Mark

Thanks Mark

The vertical vrs horizontal was a Bill term. I like it too. To be a vertical guy, I think you need to have a very focussed passion. I have that in some specific areas, but in Rolex rather than Patek.

The 3940 is a watch I love. I saw MikeH version in Paris and it is a superbly elegant watch. Yes, you hit on another that is on my defined wishlist. 5970 is one i have owned before but decided to sell. Whenever I had the choice between the 5070 and 5970, there was only one winner for me....being the one I kept.

I would say that the 3940 from your list is one I would be tempted by.

I have owned a 3800 before and just didn't enjoy it. I think it is just the case that some watches appeal a lot more!

On the Gondolo, most of them are simply too big for my wrist. I actually really like them, but once on my wrist, look ridiculous.

I will say that the Ellipse and 3940 were on my shortlist......i have probably indicated a penchant for both on the forum before.

This is a great project.

...and the 3940 I saw... was the same one :p

I like the 5970 a lot but deciding to have one or several from a lower budget is really a tough decision. From the watches you gathered you certainly made a great one.

The Gondolo is indeed a watch not easy to have on the wrist. I'm eager to see in the weeks to come how the 5124 looks like (it is 4mm smaller).

Cheers, Mark

Now I must agree!

 By: dr.kol : April 28th, 2015-05:50

I understand nothing about vertical vs. horizontal.

But what I know for sure is that 3940 together with 5550P are the finest slim perpetuals Patek has ever made! You can forget 5140 as 3940 has so much cleaner dial.

What is amazing with 3940 is that even I do not like pink gold, 3940R with brown dial is stunning - same with 3940J. And naturally, both G and P are pure perfection.

So go for the finest, go for 3940!

Best, Kari

.....i want to pay you a compliment.

You are a big guy, yet you are totally happy to wear watches that are quite small relative to the sizes that are out there. I think there are so many guys who feel in some way "threatened" by wearing a small watch...as if it is some challenge to their masculinity. You don't give a hoot about that, and it is to your great credit that you don't. The 3940 is 36mm and very slim....its not a big watch at all. I agree entirely with you...its one of the nicest watches in the Patek stable. I particularly like the P metal and the early versions of the P.

In so many manufacturers, people get so caught up with needing a "big" watch.

The trend is changing. Big is no longer quite such a theme. In fact, many manufacturers tell me quite the opposite. So yes, BRAVO for the 3940

What a heck are you speaking about!

 By: dr.kol : April 28th, 2015-07:01

Me, BIG GUY?

Look at the picture: my wife, youngest daughter, me and mother-in-law above us. Am I big?

With watches I have strict size limits: 35-40 mm. Naturally there are some exceptions: I you would like to give me your 5070P, I would wear it with pleasure till the end of my days. The same applies with all of your Calatrava you showed me in London.

I have a normal sized wrist; 200 mm / 8 inches. If I normally would wear anything bigger than 40 mm, it would both feel and look stupid.

Best, Kari

I don't remember you with so much hair, either!

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 28th, 2015-07:30
Yep...i also have a rule on 35-40mm

But I make one or two exceptions.

Thank you for your most generous offer to wear my 5070P.

I will let you know when I decide to take you up on that kind offer!

Best

Joe

Much hair?

 By: dr.kol : April 28th, 2015-07:38

The hairy one is Nina, my mother-in-law. Please pay attention to the tits to which the gravity has influenced several decades.

Allow me to be generous...

 By: patrick_y : May 5th, 2015-18:35
Allow me to be generous in offering you some wrist real estate for your 5070P as well.

It's all about finding watches that you love.  If nothing else is available that you love, don't buy anything.  Just sit and wait, maybe there will be a year or two between buying things...

Your offer is indeed generous......

 By: Baron - Mr Red : May 6th, 2015-03:59
.........i will consider it.

I forgot another watch...

By: Mark in Paris : April 28th, 2015-06:30
or another caliber to be more precise.

Having a 27-460 (with M maybe) would be a great addition too if you don't have one yet smile

Why not a Patek form watch

 By: dedestexhes : April 28th, 2015-06:13
Ellipse was already given, but depending if you want a complication or not:

  • 5100
  • 5940G
  • 5098P

Btw, I would go for a 5100G or P (if I would have the budget)

Happy hunting,

Dirk

Hi joe. Why not venture further down the vintage path

 By: watch-guy.com : April 28th, 2015-07:47
the 2526 or 570 are stunning calatravas but different to your magnificent pieces you already own- or maybe ref 2552

I would agree with 3940p as well

I am sure whatever you choose will be top class

Ps I tried on a vintage ellipse   Be aware it is a small piece

Julian

Hey Julian....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 28th, 2015-08:42
.....Ellipse is indeed small....but i think it works for me.

More Calatravas....yes, I have definitely considered that too. When I see a WG or Steel 570, it is very tempting for sure. The way I see it, though, is that I have 4 Calatravas of various metals and styles and really enjoy that variation.

What I miss......is something different.

Will email you tomorrow btw.....

You can't go past a 2552 in wg

what about 3970p (I love spending other people's money)

What about a simplicity?

See you Thursday

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 29th, 2015-03:22

Yes, 2508? I was actually thinking of mr dufour

 By: watch-guy.com : April 29th, 2015-04:20

close....2509....(with the AM movement)

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 29th, 2015-04:22

Yes

This is class. Understatement. Beautiful. Timeless. This is Patek at its best. I simply love this look.

Good advice about vintage Ellipse

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 29th, 2015-07:41
Indeed as a vintage model a tad too small.

The current Ellipse is among the few modern "magnifications" in the new collection that has worked well.

5100G, or Vintage Patek Chono, like a 1579. [nt]

5100 is unwearable for me......

 By: Baron - Mr Red : April 28th, 2015-08:53
.....just impossible to wear.

If i went there, i'd go P...... but 5100 is just no-go.

1579 is much more interesting......worth considering yes.

1579 in steel is just irresistible. [nt]
