Decisions decisions, 3919 vs 3520
It's been a long time since I've considered a dressy Patek. I understand that the 3919 has the in-house 215 movement while the 3520 is based on a Piguet ebauche. But I'm still having trouble deciding.
Can anyone please shed some light to the finer differences between the two?

I think the 3919 seems to be better if for nothing but the size and more robust 215 movement.
Caliber 177 vs 215 ...
PP used them both for a good reason in their Calatrava and Gondo lines. The cal. 177 is based on the Piguet caliber 21 and was used not only from Patek.
The cal. 215 is a movement developed by PP in their own tradition of impeccable craft. ... For some it is too tiny for today and especially when it comes with a display-back.
But the careful craft is evident in every detail of the movement and it was the first Gyromax equipped movement to run at 28.800 beats per hour.
If you don´t worry about a sub-second in that kind of classical watch, I would probably go for the 3919

Both classics...
Both represent excellent examples of the refined gentleman's dress watch. I think this is what Patek does best and both models are iconic in their own right. Hard to declare one better than the other but they are clearly different.
The 3919 is slightly larger at about 33mm but both are small by current standards. The 3919 has the subseconds whereas the 3520 does not. Hands are different with the 3919 having feuille hands to the 3520 batons.
Both are very elegant and it's really a matter of preference.
I much prefer the 3919...
I like the shape of its hands and the presence of the second hand. The size of the 215 is not an issue here due to the case diameter. In other words, I don't have any hesitation...

Foversta.....I just purchased a 1990's Calatrava,,
Ref 3919 and absolutely LOVE it ,,,,when this Masterpiece is on your wrist,, (mine is on the smaller size),,even though it is approx 33mm in dia ,,it is very proportionate to the wrist, and has such a nostalgic flair to it that ,,,you will not be sorry ,,,,besides that it's a Patek Philippe......Mark
There are still some more differences.
The 3520D has a screw back while the 3919 has a snap back. One other difference is the size of the crowns, I found the crown on the 3520D quite small and not as easy to wind whereas the crown on the 3919 is somewhat larger but large enough to make the winding process much easier.
Try setting and winding both to see what you think.
The 3520D used the Ultra Thin movement which made it about 25% more expensive than the 3919. When viewing the movements, the 3520 had the Geneva seal engraved, not stamped like the 3919 (these observations were made about 15-20 years ago so there may have been some changes since)
I sold my 3919 b/c i couldn't view the movement
what good is it if you can't view the beautiful movement?
