A bit of a past question ( Platinum and diamond)

Hi all,

I hope you all are doing well!

I was wondering if anyone could help me in this, what was the exact year that Patek started to place the diamond between the lugs to differentiate it's Platinum models, and what was the exact model that was the launch model?

As for the spec of the diamond, can somebody confirm with me that it is a 0.02c diamond that is a G colour?

Any insight will be much appreciated!

Hi Stephen,

I believe the practice started in 1998 with the introduction of 5056P.  The reference was discontinued in 2006. 

As for the diamond specs, I am not quite sure.

I believe that pp uses wesselton diamonds so it would be H... but I could be wrong.

Color: All diamonds on Patek Philippe watch cases are D, E, F, or G. 

Clarity: Patek Philippe demands "loupe-clean" internally flawless diamonds that are observed by a professional with a 10x enlarging loupe. 

Cut: The cut is an essential element in highlighting a stone.  Professionals have established a grading scale for cut quality; excellent, very good, good, fair, poor.  All Patek Philippe diamonds range from Excellent to very good.

My understanding is that it is always 0.02 carats for the small diamond to indicate a platinum watch.  And this diamond is F-G color, IF.  I haven't seen a diamond larger than 0.02 carats on any non-jewelled Platinum watch.  Even the large in size 5207P seems to have a 0.02 carat diamond.  

But the jewelry pieces, I understand can be utilizing D, E, F, G color, IF diamonds, of various sizes and shapes.  

All Gemstones on Patek Philippe, including the 0.02 carat diamond on platinum cased watches are always mentioned on the certificate of origin.
