Patek Philippe

Hi -

I'm considering the purchase of a Patek watch with a hobnail bezel.  A good friend is warning me against the purchase due to if the watch is scratched or dinged on the face of the bezel - the watch is done.  

Is this really the case?  

Anyone with experience wearing a PP with hobnail bezel care to share your horror stories?  Are there any?  

It has taken me a number of years, but I have come to really appreciate the refined elegance of this design element.  The new 5139 with black dial is stunning in pictures - anyone see one in real yet?

some seven years ago. This watch is not for daily wear but still I wore it quite a lot in the beginning. For sure it is not a watch to the construction site but I have not had any problems with the Hobnail bezel. I guess a watch with polished bezel would have already pretty many scratches. 

I figured PP would fix that bugger right up. 

Truth is - I see the fashion heading back to classicism - Maybe its just that I'm getting older, but the hobnail to me is refreshing. 

I saw a white dial 5139 on a gentlemens wrist at a watch event a few weeks ago, and I was really floored by the shine and presence of the watch.  The size was great as well on this person's wrist. 

I'll share a little secret....I really has a tremendous dislike for the 5960P when it was first released.  fast forward a few years - I was at SIHH waiting for a drink and a man has his arm on a stool around a lady and he was wearing a 5960P.  That watch looked to me to be the nicest watch in the world that day. The way the case sat on the wrist - the way the dial shined in the lights - it was a perfect and masculine watch.  Needless to say - a year later I ate my words and bought a 5960P. 

I guess I need to see pateks on other peoples wrists to realize how beautiful they are

friend's assessment of the references with a hobnail bezel.  I have had about thirty years of experience with many different references featuring this bezel and can assure you the hobnail bezel is one of the very few which after years and years of wear... the watch still looks fabulous. I have had some clients who have babied it and others who have worn it hard.

Hobnail bezels take the daily beating much better than other bezels. My personal experience is that flat bezels, e.g. 5396, shows scratches the most on their mirror like finish, rounded bezels are much better, e.g. 5140, but the hobnail is the best as they successfully absorb even the dents and dings, which stand out in other bezels. Frankly, I wish there were more choices of Pateks with hobnail bezels (different hobnail patterns as well). Cheers. Jim

 

I have a very small collection of watches.  Maybe 8 to 10 at any moment.  I however wear my PP5116G almost daily.  It is the watch that fits under my dress shirt with the greatest of ease.  In my opinion it is simple, elegant and classy.  Hobnail is a great touch and after 2 years of nearly daily wear it looks the same as the day I bought it.  However I am trading it in next week for the 5139g.  I wanted to move onto a grand complication and still keep my hobnail bezel.  I personally saw the new (2011) 5139 with the black dial and thought it was very nice but too dressy to be mt daily wear watch.  I felt like it was too formal.  So I located a new never worn 5139 from 2010 with teh silver dial.  I am sure it will become my new everyday watch.

I have a 5115 G for the formal occasions. I like the hobnail betzel on these classical watches and it reflects lights in a very elegant way. The matching cufflinks is Ref. 9020/1. This is one of the best cufflinks I have ever seen (together with the Elipse d'Or and Nautilus ones). I don't know why Patek decided to discontinue the cufflinks with hobnail pattern, but maybe you can still find them in some bigger retailer stores.
