Patek Philippe

I've been over thinking which Patek to buy for my first one for the last couple of months. I decided that tomorrow I'm going to pull the trigger. Here are the choices:

New 5711
Pre-owned 5056P or 5146P

I love all three models but can only buy one at the moment. I'm therefore probably going to get the Nautilus for the versatility. However the other two are awesome and are platinum but more money. I plan on wearing daily and I can see myself with any of the above. How important is buying an item like this new vs pre-owned? If anyone has an opinion of what I should get I would appreciate your advice! thanks

me too recently purchased my first PP.
leisurely browsing through catalogues looking for a PP, i saw too many models i wanted to buy -actually, there are almost no PP watches i wouldn't like to have on my wrist. five models made it on my shortlist, price was not an issue. when the moment came that "I decided that tomorrow I'm going to pull the trigger", i had to recede in the depths of my mind to find out which one i REALLY wanted, and made my decision all alone. i bought a calatrava, but i already had a premonition that i'll purchase and collect more PP in the future. next time i'll go to switzerland, i'll acquire a golden ellipse.

now since i "have" the taste, i'd like to "have" the watch. but supposedly one "never really owns a PP"...
anyway, you have posted some great pictures of the 3738 and i took the liberty to use one of them as my desktop picture

Bond Street botique they had a Golden and a Platinum one in theire window.

Although wearing mine on the day, I was a bit irretated wheter a new, bigger golden Ellipse came out:

it looked so nice and "big" that it confused me a lot for a second! !

The more versatile of the 3 you mentionned being, IMO, the Nautilus 5711.

Try them, your wrist will tell you which one to choose.

It is one those Pateks that every PP lover likes and would like to have too.

After that you can go more classic, more formal and choose a dress watch with  a leather strap.

The nautilus can also be combined to suit, certainly, but for formal wear a leather strap watch is more appropiate.

Having been handed down a 5711 I would definitely recommend it. Great looking sport watch (very light too) that can be worn everyday.

Am also looking to get my first patek with my own money and am deciding between 5980 and 5726....and yes it is very hard to pick one PP from the vast collection that they have to offer but you can't go wrong with a Nautilus (I remembered reading somewhere that the Nautilus saved Patek in the 70's from their financial woes)

When Im purchasing something of this caliber being a Patek I would want it brand new.

I personally would not purchase a used patek unless youve real done your homework on the watch itself.

Meaning service dates/ who owned it/ how it was cared for. Even though the watch may look beautiful and you may be drawn to it you never know what kind of things are going on with the movement.

My advice is buy new..

and your purchase is probably made, my answer will begin with the bottom line which is, buy what you like, not what we like. As everyone else has suggested that the Nautilus is somehow the obvious choice, and something "any serious Patek lover will be fond of", or something to that effect, I will state that I am not in that group. To me, the 5056P stands head and shoulders above the very fine group of three you were deciding from. I find it's balance and proportion to be the best of it's class, which of course includes the 5146 - a much more popular choice. Personally, I don't care for any Nautilus, but that means nothing to anyone but me - something to consider for your next purchase. Hope you enjoy the one you bought, and that you will post a shot.

I do love the Nautilus and will probably get someday. I went for the 5146P. I'm excited. Details to follow.

I have seen many coments for asking advice on choice.
Yet, the words of "William C" describe everything.

There are many watches, watch company, and Patek watches.
It is more and more defficult to choose which one to get.
As we acquire more knowledge, we get confused more.

It is very difficult choose.

The bottom line is as "William C" tells, getting what one likes
is the most practical decision, I guss.

Personally, I think, there is no mistake in what patek to choose.

 

The 5146 dial began to look like two very close set eyes with a deeply frowning mouth (moonphase). I know it's only in my head, but it was the last Patek I ever owned--and I've never quite gotten over the unhappy face of that dial... I warn against that dial! Even if it's a possibility that you are 'mental' like me. Go 5711. Can't go wrong--a classic simple modern Patek. (yeah, I know I had my issues with that watch too, but in retrospect, it was very very nice, and tremendously versatile.) Good luck. (apologies to 5146 owners... I realize it is entirely my own perspective.)

So I bought a pre-owned but sealed 5146P. I've had it for several days and I love it. It's my first Patek as I mentioned earlier and the finish is amazing. It was breeze to set initially and I'm enjoying watching all the complications work. I am so impressed that I decided to order a new 5711 Nautilus to go with it! I figured that the two will complement each other perfectly. I'm officially shut off from any new watch purchases! I also ordered a Swiss Kubik winder so that I can alternate between the two. I read a great review on the winder and saw a video on youtube that showed how quiet it is. It can be programmed via usb cable on the computer for turns per day and direction. I still can't believe I did all this. It's really a dream come true for me. I'll try to post pictures next week when everything arrives.  Regards
