i really like the 5712/1a but am less taken with the bracelet. I was wondering if anyone has tried fitting the leather strap or the composite one on this watch instead.?

When I looked at the 5712/1a I could not see an easy easy way to remove the bracelet. The final links/hinges going into the case do not appear to have screws to disassemble them. In the 5712G and R both have end links that can be removed and in theory you could fit any strap you liked. In fact the latest versions of the 5712G & R come with a rubber/tropical strap which you can switch out yourself. You might want to consider a G or R as the pricing is pretty close.

my plan B was to look at the 5712g if it wasn't possible with the steel version. I'll have a closer look at the areas you pointed out. many thanks

That is a good news as most luxury sport watch come with a rubber strap. I would love to see a picture of 5712G or R with a composite
strap.
