Patek Philippe

What Patek Philippe models are usually recommended for a first time purchase? Are there also any posts or other sources with this kind of information? Thanks!

Much will depend upon your pocket book + how you plan to wear the watch.  However, assuming you want to stay in the 5-figure area, both a 5712/1A or 5167/1A are excellent models that look great and can be worn in nearly any setting, IMO.

As for a PP first model, I'd say " follow your heart ", and try the model you condier buying, to see if it really sings loud to your ears.

There is no possible advice, as it depends of your wallet, tastes, and even, knowledge of the brand.

That is a passionate thing to take your time to discover all the treasures a brand can offer, and then, to hunt the beloved model.

 depending on budget etc just pop into your local AD most are very accomodating and will have a good selection for you to peruse, albeit i doubt if they have the 'wanted' models but still have a very good selection nontheless...personally a good starter which IMO affordable and good value for money is a 5167/1A with rubber or steel strap...simple and beautiful sits on your wrist like a glove....this was my first PP purchase so i maybe a little biase!!lol if money no object then it's gotta be 5970(G,J,P).....if your extremely lucky to find one

I'd of course my 1st Patek to be the from the ones I like, such as 5040 or 3970 but since those are out of my league so I keep on being Patek-less.
I was close to buying 5296-001G once but opted for VC Patrimony boutique piece instead as my heart went for VC instead.
So, choose with your heart and of course, your budget

an annual calendar or  with a WorldTimer.

I think the Calatrava or gondolo are too "simple" to enter the Patek world.

A complicated watch is more interesting.

I am somewhat concerned as to why you would want a Patek if you're not sure which model you want.

While this is certainly none of my business why anyone buys a Patek, I would note that Pateks can be bought for the wrong reasons (buying only for the brand reputation is the ultimate faux pas) and not for pure appreciation of the watch itself.

If you have to ask such a question, I would reconsider acquiring a Patek. Don't buy a Patek just for the sake of buying one. Buy a watch that you truly love, one of those love at first sight scenarios.

Just my opinion, best taken with a grain of salt. I wish you the best of luck in your quest!

I feel like I am part of a family because of your warm responses.  I have so far narrowed the choices down to three models, 5711, 5712, and 5980, and I will now start my research on these.  This is exciting for me!  Thanks for leading me to this excitement.

To anyone just starting out in the PP world, I would suggest the PP5980.

This baby helped start the pandemonium for me!

I hope you find the right piece that suits you.

There are many things to consider when purchasing ANY timepiece — type/size of movement, size of case, multi function, type of metal, etc. You'll need to find the one that really speaks to you as you try them on. And you really should try them on. The choices you've stated are great starters. My choice is the 5712/1A over the 5980 as a personal preference.
