Patek Philippe

Any thoughts on 5971?  My AD offers me the watch but not sure if I should get it.  I know this piece is very hard to get  and I do like the watch even though it has the bling.  Not sure if 5970p would be availabe in the future and still not sure if I was able to get 5004G (comparable pricing to 5971p) .  Should I pass on this opportunity and see what happens at Basel 2009 (5970p?) or should I get it?  I have to make a decision in the next few days and hope I could get some input from the expert in this forum, thanks!

then I assume that you're already a pretty big and serious collector.  Hence, you must already know your own answer.  whatever we think or post, probably won't make a difference.  Personally, I don't like the bling, but I like the black dial and the watch itself.

I would buy it If I were you. It is a beautiful watch. I'll be very happy if I can have this oppourtunity to buy

Bling bothers me a little so I'd wait for the 5970P, if there's one coming that is and if the rumor is close to accurate, your prayers will be answered very soon

there is any hesitation at all in getting the piece due to the bling, I would pass. Why? Because this hesitation is most likely due to the fact that diamonds being worn by men on their watches has not transferred to mainstream acceptance thus this sense of apprehension on your side. Diamond earrings, gold watches are a yes in some areas/locales but diamond encrusted watches? Takes more than a certain oomph to pull it off. The bling is looking to turn out to be THE BIG factor in spoiling your purchase, if not today, then somewhere down the road when it is gathering dust in your watch drawer/safe. I would pass. Just my own two cents.

I personally think the 5004 is the watch you want to get if you have a choice. While the 5970 is a tremendous piece, I personally think the split chronograph is a greater feat in watchmaking.

The 5971 as opposed to the 5970 are two very different watches. The 5971 focuses a large amount on the aesthetics of the watch, and personally I think the 3.88 carats worth of baguette diamonds on the case detract from the overall point. The point being the movement that tells you the time.

I'd go for the 5004, which isn't much more than the 5971. Otherwise, I'd simply elect to choose the 5970. Actually, for that kind of money, I'd really buy the 5960; as I don't need to have a perpetual calendar, and I'd get a 5140 for that, and I would prefer a chronograph that counts to 12 hours. Plus I appreciate the fact that you can actually use the 5960 in a way to display a second time zone if you do it correctly.

Decisions, decisions. If it's between the 5971 and the 5004, I'd go for the 5004. But don't overlook the 5960 (unless you already have one).

Or go with either a 5970 or a 5004.

The 5971 is a great watch, if it didn't have the bling!

I love the black dial, but have never liked to see diamonds,Baguettes etc on a gents watch.

Thank you very much for all of you taking your time to respond to my question.  I'll keep you guys posted once I made my decision.

If you ask me, the 5971 looks very nice except for the diamonds. A lot of people do not like it. Technologically, the 5004 is a better watch. It depends on what you are looking for. The 5970 looks nice except that it does not have a black dial and platinum. However, people prefer 5970 as it has no diamonds. I remember one person (quite harshly) saying that the 5971 "makes one look like a pimp."

Is it official that 5004p is out of production, what about 5004G?  I guess I should seriously consider 5971p if 5004 is out of production unless there is a new model 5970p at the Basel 2009.
