I haven't seen many of these relatively recent automatic calatrava with date watches in either secondary market or auction. Are there any other fans of these very simple but classic watches out there?

Maybe people like them so much that they are not reselling them.
A related hypothesis would be that the 3998 appeals less to multiple-watch collectors than to one-watch wearers. Since one-watch wearers don't tend to be resellers, this leads to the same conclusion.
It's a good idea to be cautious about watches that are very heavily traded in the secondary market. It may indicate that they have problems of types that do not become apparent until after they have been purchased.

I'm a big fan of that reference...
...although I'm partial to the later version with sans serif date wheel numerals. mkvc has a good point; one doesn't find too many of those in the secondary market.
