I was told that in Asia, the above complications are not listed in the new price list for 2008.  I'm wondering if fellow purists in Asia can confirm this fact, and what their respective AD's are saying about this.  Does this mean that it's no longer being made, or simply that no new orders are being taken?  Thanks from a Purist in N. America.

 

I confirmed with this information with my AD (Dec. 31/06, N.America) that the 2008 price list no longer carries the 5970/5070.  My AD went one step further and called Patek H.Q (Geneva) who confirmed that these models are no longer available for order. 

I suspect you may still see some deliveries of these models in 2008 (back orders).  However,  AD's are apparently no longer take orders for these models.

No big surprise, but the secondary market has already caught wind of this fact, and have jacked-up prices accordingly.

I feel like this is the "passing of the torch" of the old 27-70 lemania movement into a (new Patek in-house movement?), from the info that we've gathered thus far. Of course, this is pure speculation on the bit of info that we've learned.  However, I'm sure that this news will cause fellow purists who are waiting for either watch some angst, whether a new 5970/5070 will ever be released to their AD this year.   I was visiting Las Vegas, CA and NY during the holidays, and can tell you that all the AD's that I went to had Calatrava's and midsize Aquanaut's in their display.  One Orange County AD informed me that they won't expect to see either of the above models anymore this year, without knowing that the price list had deleted them.   They won't take any orders for "hard to get pieces" either.  Congratulations to fellow purists who were lucky enough to be allocated one in the past.  Enjoy them.

 

If all is true, the 5970 will have the shortest production run of any Patek Chrono/Perpetual in the company's history (2005-2008???).   Having said that, the 5970 will still exceed total production of the 2499, which I believe was in production from approx. the early 1950's to 1984.  Even the 5070 is relatively short-lived vs. it's predecessor : ref: 1463 (chrono).  

At this stage, it's still a bit premature, and somewhat speculative.

Production runs may be shorter but wouldn't you agree that the total number of pieces is likely much higher for both the 5070 and 5970?

As stated in my earlier post (ie.2499 has a lower total production).  However, I always suspected that the 5970 was a transitional model, until Patek had their in-house movement ready for launch.

So, given the tremendous costs associated with bringing a new Patek model to market, especially a grand complication  (tooling and advertising costs, R&D etc), this production run from approx. 2004 to 2008 (???) is very, very short indeed.

 

very interesting to see what comes out of the watch fairs this year as replacement for the perpetual chronographs of Patek. I imagine it is a mainstay in their stable of watches therefore a replacement must be incoming. I must admit that I can't wait to see what is in store. Wondering how they will top the beauty of the 5970. But I think that was said too of the 3970

Couple of months ago, I had an order placed for a 5970R with a 20% deposit with an AD here in the US; Mid December I was told that I will have to pay a higher price (10-15%) due to the anticipated price hike. More recently (few days ago) I was told that its unlikely that they will get delivery of any further 5970s and they will be refunding my deposit. Extremely disappointing :-(((
I guess this does make it one of the shortest runs of regular production watches i.e 2005-2007. The grey dealers are already asking for 120k+ and only time will tell what the prices be in the future.

The price that you quoted is actually not too bad. 

I did a search last night, and the few that I saw listed for sale  were asking quite a bit more.  However, this  does not necessarily mean they will get there asking price right away, but the trend appears to be up wards.

I guess the news from your AD sums it all... for them to refund your deposit, this really means the end of the model, and that the deliveries this year on previous orders are not too hopeful.   I wonder what the new model will be.... 6970?  I don't think there is any model above the 6000 yet, correct?  Just talking out of my head.  

How about the 5070... are there fellow purists out there who had an order last year for delivery this year?  What are you hearing from your AD?

Since I got the last catalogue a few weeks ago, I keep looking at this one.

Black dial and square diamonds are quite appealing. I could do with them easily.

In Asia the 5971 is the most wanted reference in the current grand complicated line. Here the waiting line in most AD is incredibly long. However not every AD can get one. Just like 5020 which most people hate at the time when it was just indroduced, look at the current market price right now, which reflect that people tend to like it more. Sometimes taste will change. Besides, I think square diamond go very well with man's watch. I tried it on and look astonishing.

Yes, it does seem to be the most desired reference in the current grand complication line. Wouldn't know whether due to the news of its WG/RG discontinuation, relatively low list price compared to the WG/RG or simply because as you said, the square diamonds looking really nice flush with the black dial and PT case.

Nevertheless, congrats on having tried it already. Am sure it was a nice experience. Thanks for sharing...
