The service also stated that it needed a few knocks and scratches fixing - could these marks be caused by moisture ?

You say you recently purchased this watch, right? Why didn't you attempt to check authenticity prior to purchasing it? Seems to me that's the logical thing to do when buying a watch of this caliber...🤔

It came from a reputable dealer with all the right paperwork and signs so have never questioned authenticity, but it always still plays on ones mind no matter what

You could try with a PP SA if you have a relationship to share the SN to see if they match the same watch with the same dial ... 
That should give you a first impression.

Then the ultimate check is to send the watch for a service ...
