5110 or 3940?
That's the short version.
Long version is, I currently own one Patek, a 5110G. I love it. It's perfect.
But I also love the 3940J. It's also perfect.
Do I stick with my world time, or switch to the perpetual? How to decide?
Your thoughts appreciated.
They are so different that it's really tough to give any good advice on this...but let me say that, if I ever had to own *only one* Patek, that'd probably be either a WT or a rare handcraft (or both!)...Hence, I guess, 5110 for me between the two ;-)

I would say if it’s one Patek you want why not own one of the most classic perpetual calendar watches ever made, 3940? It is the archetypal watch of the Patek brand. It has so much importance for the brand. It saved Patek during the 1980s quartz watch craze.
The world time is also beautiful and a classic as well however if history influences your decision then the 3940 takes the cake. Philip Stern I am sure would agree. It was the watch he wore daily.

Well, there are less world time than perpetual calendars, and less charming and iconic world times than the PC.

That is absolutely correct and a good point.
There are LOTS of perpetual calendar watches that I think are excellent (almost too many to name!) but very few non-Patek world times that I appreciate.
Svend Andersen... Krayon (if that counts)... Lange and Nomos both have really good full city ring watches, but neither of those are actually worldtimers.

Both such great watches and both micro-rotor endowed. I'm just biased towards the WorldTime.
The 3940 is a beautiful watch. I absolutely think it's a great timepiece. And a fantastic watch. It's a gentleman's watch. But my favorite is still the WorldTime; it is a cosmopolitan's watch, not quite a gentleman's watch, but still a very sophisticated timepiece. I can totally see that WorldTime watches aren't in vogue right now due to the fact that people cannot travel! I'm just more partial to the WorldTime. Louis Cottier did such a good job!
'Gentleman's watch' is exactly it.
When I think of owning a 3940, I think of it as an only watch, of wearing it every day and it elevating whatever I'm wearing and whatever I'm doing. Slim, tasteful, subtle perfection. That's a true gentleman's watch!

But it would be a great daily watch to own and wear! I just like the WorldTime. I find the WorldTime watches to be very elegant and cool. The thin-ness of the 3940 is very elegant. But at the same time I want something that's a little more modern and the WorldTime looks much more modern to my eyes.
I'd pick between 5110G and the 3940P...
I have been wondering if there are any late 5110Gs in grey gold or if they all came in plated white gold. If I there are any in grey gold I'd go with 5110G, otherwise straight to 3940P. I have always wanted to like the 5110P but whenever I look at it the blue feels a little cold.

I would choose the 3940. Absolutely, without a doubt. I wore one as a “Dailey” for 10 years and gave it up. That was a mistake, and so I will get another 3940. I cannot recommend the 3940 high enough. It’s a perfect watch.

After 10 years.....
of wearing it nearly every day, I think I started to take the watch for granted ( another way of saying that I got bored with it). I also went through a phase where I didn’t want to be wearing a”Dead Man’s Watch”. I wanted to have Patek Philippe of my own with my name on the certificate . I sold the 3940 and that helped me to get into a 5320 ( in truth a MUCH easier watch for me to read and therefore much more practical as a Dailey wearer. . I must admit that I do miss my 3940. I’ll get another one someday and simply enjoy it as a beautiful timepiece. They are beautiful and exceptionally well made watches. I feel the same way about the 3970. Perfect in its own way.

5320 is super appealing, too. Less likely to bore you but also, I bet, less likely to slide quietly into 10 years of daily service.
3970 is a whole other story, and an *utterly* worthy only Patek. But it costs significantly more than a 3940 and 5110 combined!

you are correct. In 10 years I may well be back to a 3940! The 3940 is such an excellent design and is so comfortable to wear that it fits perfectly into Dailey life.Its an easy watch to forget about and draws very little attention to itself. It’s low profile also means that it is prone to less damage. It really is a perfect ( albeit very complicated) watch.
If I were to have one Patek and had to choose from those two it would be the 3940 hands down. It represents the quintessential Patek; thin, elegant,complicated and exudes class in an understated way. Of course it also depended upon how much
you actually need the World Time function. My dear friend has a yellow gold 3940 for years. I hand carried it for him to New York several years ago for a service. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a watch look as good as that 3940 does on his wrist. Amazing.
I don't really consider the world time function to be a practical complication.

WT for me
For PT horological significance but also for being the only complication that beats any digital device. That’s no small feat. Plus it’s ever more relevant in our globalized business world.

5110 vote for me
its a dream watch and more versatile than a 3940 which seems like an ultimate dress watch.
Does anybody know if the 5110Gs are all Rhodium plated or if the late ones are grey gold through and through? Thanks!
