Hi Patekova , thanks for this post that brings out great discussion points. Based on not having seen the 5231J in the metal, my comments here are...

at an initial stage based on 5231 photos only.
I like the 5230 case (refreshing for a new reference) but wish that the 5231 would retain the 5230 hands which are attractive in their own rights and which can continue the 5230 lineage.
Having said that, I personally like the scissors hands more on the 5131 because of its vintage, distinct and unusual looks.
Although the Patek logo is consistent with 5230 lineage, it does obstruct part of the enamel dial which is the key to this watch. As a owner of 5131s, I attest to the discrete and subtle nature of the engraving of the Patek logo on the 5131s. The engraving enables a full appreciation of the whole enamel map.
Based on what I know thus far, I call it a tie until I see the 5231 in the metal.
Motif wise, I guess the world time is best with a map. Is it better with fewer continents ? Probably, but from a marketing perspective, less collectors would find it meaningful because their countries would not be on the map of each version. Just my 2 cents.
And for once in a long time I am actually leaning towards the new model. Will need to see it in the flesh to confirm for sure but on first impressions I prefer the case much prefer the Patek Philippe on the dial instead of bezel I agree a bit of a shame about not much change with the map but I have to say the 5231 is the winner for me. Prefer the different hand. Look forward to holding one soon. M.
