5960 or 5980
5980/1ar (two tone) has been on my list for years but 5960/1g (white gold) is another option
Same movement but gets annual calendar, power reserve and am/pm indicator. More useful, I like red hand to mix up with blue dial. Similar msrp to 5980/1ar and is literally available in every AD I walk in. 5980 is a different story.
1. Service cost - will 5960 cost much more, because of the annual calendar. Even my AD sales wasn’t 100% sure.
2. 5960/1G strap is really bad IMO, any good alternative out there?
I have seen a guy put on a leather strap for his royal oak chrono, it looks awesome, but haven’t seen any for 5980 though...Anyone done it?
P.S don’t wish to pay crazy premium for 5980. But how’s pre owned price for 5960?

The 5960 ( G or A ) is ( for the moment ) under the radar and more interesting from an horological point of view. I would go for the 5960.
And of the strap is not your taste, any good strap maker will find a solution for you. Go, and enjoy!

5980/1AR
Great references both, for different reasons. First off, I think it is essential to point out that both these references will be discontinued shortly (both within 2019/2020)*. So, make your move!
The 5980/1AR will hold better in time (both aesthetically and monetery). So, my choice, right now, would be for this one. In addition, i think service cost difference between the two is going to be negligible, but call PP and ask.
The 5960 was a superb reference for Patek overall. The G should be the final itteration - and it is not the best one for sure. It is a watch I would consider, as a 3rd PP timepiece. Not the first, not the second. It is not an aesthetic result that you associate immidiately with Patek, due mainly to the color combination on the dial. So, it would be my third watch from Patek - to have something different, slightly off the core aesthetic route and to have some fun. Same logic as the 5524 and 5968 - other "3rd" Patek Philippe timepieces.
Whichever is your choice though, don't forget the most important factor of all. Enjoy it!

5980 would be my selection
The ring on the 5960 seems ti my view to be very out of proportion to the dial. I would look to the 5980
Personal taste...
I think the 5980/1AR is one of the sexiest Pateks. I love the blue dial and wearability of the watch being 120 meters.
That said, with a nice navy alligator strap, the 5960G could be a real "low flyer." The Annual Calendar in apertures makes it VERY easy to read.
If you can put them both on, take whichever one speaks to your heart the most.

Thanks guys! Yes the thing I love about 5980 is the bracelet. Something I like about 5960, but again this is a watch I don’t know if I would wear it as a dress watch or a sport watch!
The only problem is, I have never tried on any 5980 in person, in fact I can’t find any in my local AD or even grey dealers!
But u guys right, don’t settle for 2nd favourite.
In fact, if today AP royal oak puts own in house movement, then it would be in par with 5980 in my opinion (in particular this years 38mm release would be a better fit for my small wrist)
