I thought the most complicated/expensive ones were coming with a buckle, but i also saw some of the platinium ones with a tang instead of a buckle... so i'm a bit confused now
Also the bckle itself is around 2500 gbp !! without the strap though....

More and more, people seem to tend to have more difficulties in understanding how subjective a matter it is. A standard from some specific period can evolve as well and once people are used to something, they don't change easily. One person's concept of "right price" can and will be different to another person's concept. Stating as some sort of fact that price

Some watches come with a deployant clasp while others have a pin buckle. I personally prefer the latter because sometimes the deployant clasp is not so comfortable. Yes the PP deployant clasp is not cheap but many argue it is a piece of jewel on its own and having it on a watch prolongs the life of the leather strap. There is no rule that only the most expensive Pateks come with a deployant clasp as watches like the 5153 and 5230 come with a deployant clasp as standard.
Personal Preference
I really like using the simple buckle. The deployant clasp makes me nervous . I prefer the simple, classic buckle on all of my watches.
They are also easier to adjust
from hole to hole should one be living in a tropical climate like I do.
Interesting. I’m the exact opposite. Why does deployant make you nervous?
Pin buckle makes me nervous. Even though it hasn’t happened to me yet, I’m always afraid a watch with pin buckle is going to slip through my fingers as I’m taking it off and fall to the floor. One doesn’t have this concern with deployant buckle. It is much easier to adjust, say for a humid day that causes your wrist to swell, a pin buckle. For convenience, the pin buckle wins. For safety, the deployant wins for me.
The deployant buckle does not make me nervous
but quite a few are not as comfortable to wear due to their construction. I agree they are safer when you remove the watch but I am pretty careful when removing my watch anyway and always ensure it i done over a mattress so that if it falls (which it never has), it will be fine. The deployant buckle also adds weight to the watch. For some, this is a good thing but for me personally, the lighter the watch the better as I would prefer not to feel the watch because the minute I put it on, it becomes an extension of my wrist!

that the deployant one can be quite uncomfy compared to the pin one but it's quite aesthetic though (the one with the patek logo)

I would never prioritise good looks over comfort. It is like buying a great looking pair of shoes that gives you blisters! Okay, perhaps an extreme analogy since wearing a watch with a deployant buckle should never result in any injury just possible discomfort.

I guess I just haven’t had the issue with weight or experienced any loss of comfort on my deployant. I’m wearing one right now on my 5230 and I can’t honestly say I notice a difference in weight or comfort for a similar watch in my collection with pin buckle. That’s just me, though.

I had a 5575G and a 5153G and both deployant buckles were not the most comfortable. If you fit a pin buckle to your 5230, you will notice the difference in weight. More importantly, the fact that you are happy and comfortable with your deployant buckle is what matters most. I am just a fussy old pot that claims to be a perfectionist!

Sometimes it takes me a while to notice things such as this. I wouldn’t say you’re a fussy old pot anymore than I’m still in honeymoon phase with my latest piece 😁
I am actually quite amazed
that the 5230 has not been selling well since its launch. It is so much better looking and better proportioned than the 5130 and I would have thought that it would be a hit! Beautiful dial, gorgeous lugs, slightly smaller case, what is there not to like?? Surely not the deployant clasp??!!!
You and me both. I don’t understand it, but I consider myself lucky to acquire one under these circumstances.
As you say, there is a lot to love. Case size is perfect, dial is fantastic, the lugs get some criticism but to me they are a highlight, the removal of crown guards make it a more seductive offer, too. Everything from the font on the cities disc to the proportions of the discs to the dial and overall case are great, in my opinion. Perhaps not enough people have experienced it in person to be convinced yet. In any event, the lack of fervor for this one by the populous doesn’t diminish my enthusiasm for it at all.
The best part
is that despite the poor sales, the watch still holds its value relatively well in the used market!

as I see the 5230 in every AD I visit in UK and in Malaysia. But world timers have a price floor so the resale value of a 5230 is also dictated by the used prices of the 5110 and 5130. And the used prices of these two models remain strong. The 5230 being the current model will be priced above the 5110 and 5130 in the used market as there are quite a few of the older models around. Also, if sales of the 5230 has been relatively low, it would also follow that there are fewer 5230s in the used market!

Lower supply in used market. If ADs have the 5230, that’s one thing because if they aren’t moving Patek won’t continue to produce more. Also, if they aren’t selling their will be less on used market, which is what we see.
I wonder if the retail price is the biggest issue? I wasn’t in the market back then so I don’t know how the price compares to what retail was for a 5110 or 5130. Judging by the used market, it seems 5110 was priced considerably lower and the 5130 more moderately lower. Perhaps Patek overshot on where they priced this one?

I actually remember
when the 5110R was priced at slightly more than 11k British pounds sterling in 2002/2003. Has inflation gone up by more than 300%? I doubt so but we all know that prices of watches have escalated uncontrollably in the last last 15 years. It is always a question of opportunity cost - what else can we buy that costs as much as a Patek world timer not to mention the number of brands now offering a world timer at a substantially lower price.

Mechanical watches have been enjoying immense popularity among all walk of life and even among women too so manufacturers have seized the opportunity and I do not really blame them. And we all know how addictive our passion is - one watch is never enough!!

We should keen in mind the spirit of this forum and the idea of not getting carried away by money. We can surely "think" that a buckele or tang or 5110 timer is or is not acceptable price-wise or in line with other WT offerings . We can have our thoughts based on , what we believe is a set of accepted, pre-set norms in terms of prices. There are contemporary standards, linked to a certain commercial model and demographics, a confluence of trend lead by the main players of the commercial standards in hotels. So, a standard - about buckele or tang - is set. However, as time goes by, the standard will surely change.
But going beyond the "thinking" it in the privacy of our own minds and being , the voice that represents the masses is quite another. Each society and culture places its own standards on what is and is not "acceptable" in spending money. That varies a lot from one culture/nation/person to another. What allows one person to stand up and make "judgment"?

I have a deployant clasp on my 5711J and it's not ideal in terms of ergonomy - but it's also different from the Calatrava clasp.
In my personal view, the most comfortable and most easily to adjust deployant clasps are made by Cartier.
That being said, I do like Patek's deployant clasp with the Calatrava cross very much. Indeed, a piece of jewelry!

The Cartier deployant buckle is comfortable and the Patek deployant clasp looks better than it wears! And comfort is pretty important when wearing a watch for most of us I think.

My guess is that Patek makes the decision for every watch based on several criteria: aesthetics, cost to manufacture, number of watches with buckle/folding, etc.
From a consumers perspective, I would like to have pin buckles and deployables available in every metal to be able to "customize" my watches. Sometimes it's necessary for comfort reasons.

it only seems to come in WG ... which does not help with the pricing though (around 2.5K GBP for the buckle ONLY)
