This week at the Philips auction in New York, all eyes will be on Paul Newman's Daytona. I noticed though that a very rare Patek Philippe will be auctioned, which for me personally, is my favourite watch of all time. That is quite a sweeping statement but I have coveted the 5029R since its introduction in 1997 to commemorate Patek's new factory at its new site. Issued in only 30 pieces, 10 each in yellow, rose and white gold, I was particularly partial to the rose gold model. The watch was unaffordable then and its estimate at this week's auction indicate that the watch has probably doubled in price if not more.
Still if I had the choice of only one watch to choose from, this would undoubtedly be the one (and yes I would take this over a RW Smith or a Dufour!

) The elegance of the Breguet hands and numerals to me are totally captivating and the patina on the dial is just perfect. At only 35mm, those who do know me will understand that this is the perfect case size for me. Patek's only current minute repeater offering of a similar size is the ladies 7000R at 33.7mm and the closest to the 5029 would be the current 5539 with the hidden tourbillon and therefore commanding quite a steep price.
If one looks at the intricate case design at the side of the case, one may be unaware that its beauty is due to the fact it was produced by master case maker Jean-Pierre Hagman. The case of the 5029 exemplifies his skill which allowed him to make a thin and small case yet emitting a lovely resonance from the minute repeater. The watch has a hinge back which is an additional nice detail.
The 5029 seldom appears in the secondary market due to its rarity so I expect this watch to sell for more than its estimate on Thursday.

Thank you for reading.
