Great addition to the family

Watch of the Week award just got easier. smile

The right balance of modernity and tradition. Lovely tourbillon.

Enjoy.

Andrew

With all those tomatoes from the garden, you've gotta make a batch . . .

. . . of Texas Red for that future gold medalist!

Nuthin' better than a bowl of chili ;-) . . .

Not a bad idea, Art.

But, sadly, she'd never eat it.  Sadly, this Texan in Exile is raising a Valley GIrl!

Best,

CaliforniaJed

Gotta take her to . . .

. . . Chili John's in Burbank, on Burbank Boulevard - I've never been there, but a buddy of mine swears by their Texas Red.

(True story: Carroll Shelby brought my Uncle Steve a pot of his own homemade chili after Steve finished an upholstery job for him.)

Cool story about Carroll Shelby!

 By: CaliforniaJed : September 7th, 2013-16:45
I've been to Chili John's. Their chili is really hot and really greasy.  As I recall, they make you get spaghetti noodles with it, which didn't sit right with me, but the regulars loved it.  Maybe worth a trip back -- it's probably been ten or twelve years.

Best,

CaliforniaJed

Dedication will pay off

You are rightfully proud. Good on her.

Andrew

You did say "favourite athletes"...

 By: pplater : September 5th, 2013-23:18
It is such a wide and varied world, Art, that hopefully you will not mind a personal ‘Top Ten’:

Cassius Clay.

So well regarded inside his sport and out that there is no need to defend the selection.  A man who had the courage of his convictions and all the confidence in the world to back them up.

Zola Budd.

What spirit!

Jesse Owens.

Four world records in the span of forty-five minutes, all whilst overcoming much greater hurdles than he ever faced on the track.  A beacon.

Walter Lindrum.

One of Australia’s favourite sons, and one could just as easily have nominated Fred or Horace Lindrum. This one’s for Art and Damjan!

Michael Edwards.

Not all of the great examples of true competitive spirit are necessarily success stories.  You can’t help but admire “Eddie”…

Georgie Best.

A natural talent and such a larrikin that he could have been Australian.   Taken far too early: liver failure, of course.  If you haven't heard of the man then you may know one of his wittier observations: "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

Olga Korbut.

OK, Nadia Comaneci may have been the one to go down in history, but this plucky little girl is the one who paved the way.  In her own words: “Not to brag, but in 1972, in Munich my bar routine wasn’t judged properly and the 16,000 fans knew it was the first “unofficial perfect 10”  The Olympics stopped for 20 minutes because the crowd was angry.  It was so loud, nobody could compete.  There was nothing wrong with my routine.  It should have been the first perfect 10.”

Juan Fangio.

Gotta have a driver in the list: Sir Stirling Moss might have been the patriotic choice but this one was the driver’s driver.  (Can you pick the watch in the video???)

Barry John.

When rugby was still an amateur sport and Wales was on top of the world, this was the man who put them there and kept them there for so long.  Other than your humble correspondent ( smile ) he was arguably the finest player to wear the number 10 jersey. Barry deserves a soundtrack as well: there is no sound like the terraces in full voice at Cardiff Arms Park during an international in the sixties and seventies.

Jonah Lomu.

It really hurts to nominate someone from ‘the old enemy’, but credit must be given where credit is due, and Lomu was probably the most exciting winger in world rugby, ever, period.  Perfected the ‘Maori sidestep’. If only we could have had a few more years out of him in his prime.  Watch them all: it’s worth it.

Oh, and this is Wrist Scan Friday, isn’t it?  You’ll be needing a photo of a watch then:

Nothing particularly scientific about the choice this week…

Cheers,
pplater.

Damjan appreciates it very much

as Art will, I'm certain
Speaking about scientific
Nikola Tesla the greatest scientist of all times,
in my eyes, (many will not agree)
was excellent carom player.
Story goes that he lived during studies of the game.
Regarding your nothing scientific I assume that Art will
have palpitations as I certainly did.
Yours truly
D

That scientific dial of . . .

 By: Dr No : September 6th, 2013-13:19
. . . pplater's Omega masterpiece sets my heart aflutter, too, Damjan.

(Had no idea about Tesla's skill at billiards; I'd read a biography many years back, but don't recollect that detail about his personal life.)

We agree about Tesla

 By: AndrewD : September 6th, 2013-15:29

A real magician. I always wanted to build a Tesla coil in my backyard, but dad wouldn't let me!

Andrew

That's the spirit! Thanks for sharing so many . . .

 By: Dr No : September 6th, 2013-14:18
. . . of your favorites.  Personally embarrassed for never having heard of Lindrum, even though his specialty - billiards - is a game I'm unfamiliar with.  John and Lomu are also new to me, but then, my knowledge of rugby is nil.  American football was a passion for a long time, but the descent of my favorite team . . .

. . . from arguably the greatest between the mid-'60s to mid-'80s into decrepitude has left a bitter taste for the sport.  Yesterday was the beginning of the season, and the Denver - Baltimore game was on all three screens at Maggie's, but I didn't even bother to check the score until very late in the game.

You may not have heard of Jack Tatum . . .

. . . but his nickname - "The Assassin" - should tell you all you really need to know.  My favorite football player, bar none.

Hi Pplater, thank you for the retrospectives! Agree...

 By: Sandgroper : September 6th, 2013-18:52

with you for some but have not the slightest idea about others. However the watch..... "Nothing particularly scientific about the choice this week"...you are right..... just pure beauty!

Wishing you a great, if wet weekend!

Cheers

Francois

I have to mention two characters, here.

 By: amanico : September 6th, 2013-05:52

One is my godfather, who was the first to introduce me to watches, when I was 7 years old, the other is more famous, Thomas Magnum, who has fed my passion for watches with a Rolex GMT.

But today, I don't wear a Rolex.

I wear, and for 7 days, now, this one:

Which has a common point with the Rolex GMT: It is a travel Watch!

HAGWE.

Nicolas

Well, you're one of my favorite characters, Nico . . .

 By: Dr No : September 6th, 2013-14:52
. . . and for those who haven't had the pleasure of meeting him, he is a character, and then some!

Gorgeous image, as usual.  Any favorite athletes to go along with your Godfather and Magnum?

Maggie? :)))

 By: amanico : September 6th, 2013-14:57

There are few athlètes I admired... There was one, maybe, who was a columbian Goal Keeper, Higuita. Completely crazy.

He stopped a shot ala Scorpion, once. His trainer didn't appreciate at all. He was playing for the national selection, during one world cup.

A rebel, a bad boy, a great guy!

Best,

Nicolas

PS: Now, you make my blush!

wink

This . . .

 By: Dr No : September 6th, 2013-15:16
. . . one?

smile

Isn't that crazy? It is just damn unbelievable!

Aaaah dear Nico, I have no real second, third or fourth....

 By: Sandgroper : September 7th, 2013-01:28

right now, the 3 I have in mind are, not necessarily in this order, the PP 5110P (yourssmile) the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle manual Platinum with that great "slate" dial and the Laurent Ferrier Galet Micro-Rotor or Philippe Dufour Simplicity but then that makes it fivesmile!  I do know the first though!......my dreamsmile

Cheers my friend

Francois from "just" Down Under smile

What I thought. 5110P all the way! :)
