New incoming: Montblanc 1858 Monopusher Chronograph Tachymeter
Last week I received a nice mail from my AD.
My MB 1858 Monopusher Chronograph with magnificent Minerva calibre 16.29 arrived. Today I had the time to pick up the watch.
As mentioned earlier I fell in love with the watch at SIHH last january.
Immediately ordered it on site after just having seen the watch for 5seconds.
Everthing about this watch is perfect in my eyes:
the red gold with black dial.
the old mountain logo.
even the mont blanc logo (some eople may keep on saying they should use Minerva as name - well I am already beyond this issue as this is my second MB watch with Minerva mouvement).
beautiful movement.
The monopoussoir is really something special.
And the winding of the mouvement, feels like silk.
I have already visited various manufactures and seen many watches - nothing beats this magnificent movement! This is something all other high-end brands (Patek, Lange, VC,...) may be jealous off!
The only thing that bothers me compared as this watch would be in-line with all other top chrono's (5170, Datograph,...) is the mediocre packaging (MB case, warranty card,...).
This is identical as buying a MB of a few 1000euro.
This is a shame: should have been in a nice wooden box,... Hopefully they will change this in the near future.

Stunning dial and even more stunning movement, congrats!
I agree with you on the packaging comment, that is disappointing. You should have seen what Minerva did for watches with this same movement back when they were a separate company, packaging was almost too nice!

a stunning piece
in all aspects !! I think indeed this caliber can withstand with other "haute horlogerie" pieces, for all the good reasons. A visit at the Villeret manufacture makes one understand why the watches that are made there are so different from the regular MB collection, almost on a level that indepents manufacture their watches.

Montblanc Collection Villeret packaging
Firstly, big congrats Agent Alex 007!! This is a beautiful monopusher chronograph with a great design! Love the red gold and black dial combination plus of course that gorgeous calibre 16.29!!! Thanks for sharing with us your new joy and pics

As mentioned in my other post, here in Singapore, we were told the red gold 1858 chronograph Tachymeter is sold out! One of my friend is on waitlist in case someone who ordered pulls out. So you were wise to order it quick!
On the packaging, I agree it is a shame. Even though the 1858 collection is a regular Montblanc collection, it has a Villeret movement! It should at least have a nicer packaging than the standard Star or Timewalker or Heritage Spirit collection. I believe the same goes for the Heritage Spirit Pulsograph - same regular MB packaging even though the Villeret calibre 13.21 is in the case.
The collection Villeret watches come with a much more luxurious packaging though. I guess this is where Montblanc really draws the line on this collection (which is now mostly piece unique, LE 8 or 18 only - even the LE 58 are a thing of the past now for this collection which only only produces around 50 pieces a year focusing on high complications).
Here are some pics of the box and packaging of my Villeret chronograph grand feu enamel piece 1/8. The calibre 13.21 is also found on the Heritage Spirit Pulsograph but the packaging of the 2 watches are vastly different as mentioned.

Well, I prefer to have a nice watch and a so so box than the contrary. ;)
Honestly, I think Montblanc should better opt for a nice leather AND small pouch or travel case for the 1858 Chrono monopusher, rather than a too big box. We have too many too big boxes...

If I am not wrong the more recent Villeret watches have a smaller box compared to mine (but same luxurious box).

Robin, if my memory is correct the "box or packaging" from the Heritage Spirit Pulsograph is not like this one. Otherwise it would have not bothered me so much.

Box 1858 Chrono versus Heritage Pulsograph

My memory is still good.
Now I know why disappointed in this box.
Both packaging is next to each other.
The heritage pulsograph (also Villeret mouvement but much cheaper then the 1858) has a nice wooden box which is equivalent to the watch.
Is this a cost budget idea, did they ran out, or am I the first to receive the watch without having enough packaging material (just kidding).
But now I must certainly receive a "sorry" note from MB HQ with a brand new beautiful box signed by all watchmakers.
You mean they messed with the box, and they sent you the wrong box?
Still a big box. I wish Montblanc would release a nice travel box for their fine watches, such as this Chrono 1858 Tachymeter.

Weird!
First thing I noticed was the packaging on the 1858 Monopusher was the packaging. That's the same box I got with my TimeWalker. I thought all in-house movement pieces came in the bigger lacquered packaging? I've seen TimeWalker Flyback movements and Nicolas Rieussec pieces all coming in that bigger box, did the boutique make a mistake with the packaging on the 1858?
