I do not know the story behind all this and let me go to the conclusion. This is Mr. Wagner's - the former head of Engraving Dept. - last job. He was first astonished by the request, but then got excited about it.
And the owner had envisioned this image on the Lange 1....
And the result is THIS! Metal back with pocket watch movement engraving!
If you look at it well, this engraving has three levels of surface.....
Look at this balance cock....balance screw, hair spring....
And hand engraved AL&S Dresden, just like the old pocket watch.... And the movement number has been hidden, so the number appears just like the pocket watch....
Those gears with round and square hole....
How these gears are without backlash.....
I just happened to see this somewhere some time ago, but I re-realized that there are extraordinary Lange fanatics out there, folks!
This was holiday present for my eyes!

Engraving can degrade a watch

I don't see any problem here.
This is not a pocket watch which if engraved would be much harder to get rid of it without damaging "originality" or "authenticity" which cause losses to the vintage lovers' community, LOL.

Kind of cool, definately different.
The beauty of this is that one can always just replace the metal back with the standard crystal back if one should wish to do so.

Clearly evidence of great effort by the engraver.
But the engraving looks a bit "still" to me.

Couldn't do better than this....
... under the circumstances. I see what you mean, but this is engraving, not holography.... unfortunately. Nonetheless, yes, this is a great effort by Mr. Wagner and his last one. Thank you, Mr. Wagner!
