A. Lange & Söhne

I scoured NYC in search of trying on and hopefully purchasing my first Lange. I stopped in at Wempe and was able to see a few beautiful pieces.. The Lange 1 Moonphase and Datograph. The Saxonia Annual Calendar and 1815 I was able to see in Boston. Going in, I had my mind set that I wanted the Saxonia Annual Calendar. But now I am not sure if the 38.5mm is too small? The Saxonia Annual Calendar was the frontrunner going in.. unfortunately, the case seemed a little on the small side, the dial although beautiful in pictures didn't strike me as much in person and wasn't as legible as I thought (maybe because the case was so small to my eyes). And the lugs were awkwardly big in comparison to such a small case. I liked the Lange 1 Moonphase but still thought it was a bit on the small side and the dial didn't strike me as much as it did in pictures. Surprisingly the Datograph was my least favorite, a bit too busy for my eyes. Although no Annual Calendar or Perpetual, which I originally thought I wanted.. I loved the fit and look of the 40mm 1815 in RG. I really didn't consider it as an option as I thought I was more interested in a complicated timepiece.. However, the size felt great and I really enjoyed the simplicity and Arabic numerals. I think for me the 1815 will be the perfect simple first dress Lange. I left without making a purchase, but I gained much more knowledge and hopefully will weigh the pro's and con's and come to enjoy my first Lange soon! Now for some pictures:

How does it fit under a french cuff? That's my only concern.

In fact it depends on the size of the cuff. The watch is not thick so it goes very well with it. I would say that you won't have more problems with this watch than any other dressy watch (except the ultra thins of course).

Take your time to think about it, try them again but try also to see how it feels during the day to imagine this 3 Hands watch on your wrist ... instead of a more "complicated" one, as it seems that a complication seem to be something you would like too.

I must say the 1815 is amazing concerning its look, finish, the light reflection etc ... But, as I see that you also would like a complication, I must say that I had the same thoughts before buying the 1815. Now I feel that a complication is missing and if my budget had been higher at that time, I wouldn't have chosen the 1815 ... This is really a personal feeling but if you think it can be important for you to, take the time to thnik about what would be to wear it without a complication.

To conclude, as It seems to be a watch you will only were during special dressy occasions, I would say the 1815 could fit perfectly too, and you will be able later to chose another more complicated watch (taking into account your experience with the 1815).

I may throw a dress shirt on and go try it on my wrist one last time to make sure it fits! I did want a complication or at least I thought I did just because I preferred their aesthetic appeal more in pictures.. but once I physically saw them all and put them on my wrist,  I enjoyed most the 1815's simplicity, Arabic numerals and blue hands! Complications will always be there and I can always "move up" at any time. So for now I think the 1815 will be the perfect first Lange.

that though the case may measure something less than 40mm, the dial itself may seem larger given a thinner bezel/lunette.....

and the 1815 DOES look good on your wrist

I feel it fit best among all the choices I tried. I wanted a nice complication but ultimately this is what felt right. I am sure it will be my first of many to come and I will have lots of other complicated pieces to choose in the future.

When you start to fall in love, and when you wonder which one will be yours...

Take your time, enjoy these moments, your heart will tell you which one to choose.

What I can see from your pictures is: right size.

I would even say, and not to offend any current 1815 owners, on your frist the 1815 looks a tad too big.


But you have got, literally, the best view on the situation.

agree, the 1815 looks too big for your wrist for a dress watch.
