Speaking of diamonds: The one-minute tourbillon ? its visible part at least ? is crowned by a
diamond endstone which acts as a bearing for the filigreed carriage, on both sides, of course.
Indeed, it is a delight to behold and a subtle reference to the authenticity of this rare treasure
from the house of Lange whose earlier masterpieces were identifiable by precisely such diamond
endstones.

The front side of the tourbillon carriage is held by a meticulously polished steel bar which is
accurately countersunk in the solid-silver dial and constitutes the most prominent design feature
of this LANGE 1.

The subsidiary seconds dial is perfectly poised in the asymmetric configuration of the displays.
Each visual detail reveals the successful quest for the degree of harmony in proportions
which has helped the LANGE 1 achieve the stature of a classic timepiece of captivating
distinction.


(Lange 1 Platinum, Pink Gold Case, Limited to 250 pieces)

The solid-silver dial is three-tiered and, depending on the model, provided with rhodiumed or
pink-gold appliques. The hands are made of gold. The sapphire-crystal glass and caseback
are antireflection-coated.

The movement of the LANGE 1-TOURBILLON, Calibre L961.1, is composed of no less than
378 carefully hand-finished individual parts. It embodies all of the elements which have been
responsible for the meteoric rise of Lange watches since the new era began: plates and
bridges made of cross-laminated, untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, screw balance
and hand-engraved bridges. It has 49 jewels and two diamond endstones, a
shock-proofed balance, a Nivarox 1 balance spring with a curved overcoil and a frequency of
21,600 semi-oscillations per hour.

I think size wise, the Lange 1 case looks great for a Tourbillon. Does anyone know what the dimensions are for the Pour Le Merite? Is it about the size of the 1815? It must be thicker than a 1815.

thank you for the beautiful scans. Unfortunately I can't warm up to this piece. I seem to keep repeating my self (I won't be offended if you tell me to shut up ) but the Lange 1 design should really not be meddled with. It is just so perfect that if you add or subtract anything it throuws the whole thing off balance (ie: the L1 moonphase and tourbillon)

But that's just my ?0.2 worth...

Getting a little violent, aren't we, gentlemen?

how these young whippersnappers are ruining such an iconic design, how this is portentous of the Lange company's going down the drain and generally reminiscing about the "good old days" - "Ah, by-goom... in my day there none of these Lange 1 Tourbillons. No, all we had was a basic Lange 1 stealth, none of this new-fangled moonphase business, and we were glad to have it. We had simple tastes and lived humbly and knew what values were; these kids today don't know they're born... yadda yadda yadda..." (the general conversational bent is very much the same as that at my other club TAPS - Troglodytes And Proud Society).

Burning real Lange 1 Tourbillons and Moonphases would be kind of expensive (we do have a picture of a Lange 1 Tourbillon stapled onto a dart board, though).

An Artifact of Innovation: The Hamilton/Buren Intramatic
Part I

If you are this John Davis perhaps we could speak or at least trade emails. I own over three hundred Thin-o-matic watches. I keep saying that I will sell some of the 17 jewel models, I never do. I also own twenty or so of the much harder to find 25 jewel models and one beautiful maroon dial Bulova SS Ambassador 30 jewel model. I am quite certain that I have a 25 jewel that I could part with (temporarily) if it would help advance knowledge/understanding of these gems. I have dozens of the 17 jewel models that could be donated to the knowledge acquisition effort.

 

Many of my collection are gold and gold filled. My favorites are all stainless steel models. I have one NOS SS (Buren 1000) model that winds, runs like glass. I am sure that you know this but Hamilton included an instruction in the Thin-o-matics to wind your watch ten times now and each evening when you go to bed for longer mainspring life! Somewhat humorous as the box that the watch came in heralds a lifetime guarantee on the mainspring? I can be reached during the day at 1-800-874-7877 ext 308.
