Description

Patek Philippe Ref 2540. Rare “carré galbé”, self-winding, 18K pink gold wristwatch. The watch is in mint condition with original hard raised enamel on the dial and the case back is signed with the very desirable “S&L” signature. The Archival papers have been applied for. Case is in excellent condition with very strong hallmarks. Some light scratches that can be removed but I personally would leave it as is. Dial is original matte silver with applied pink gold indexes, subsidiary seconds dial. Pink gold baton hands. Cal. 12'''600AT, stamped with the Seal of Geneva Quality Mark. Breguet balance spring, micrometer regulator, 18K gold rotor. Dial, case, and movement signed. Dim. 31 x 31 mm. Thickness 10 mm.

đź“– About This Reference

The Patek Philippe Reference 2540 is a notable example of the brand's mid-20th century production, characterized by its distinctive square case shape. This reference stands out within Patek Philippe's catalog for its departure from more common round or rectangular designs, showcasing a period of diverse case experimentation. It represents a specific aesthetic choice that offers a different visual presence compared to its contemporaries. This reference typically features a case crafted from yellow gold, with dimensions that provide a balanced and wearable profile for its era. The watch is powered by a manual-winding mechanical movement, consistent with Patek Philippe's horological practices of the time. The crystal protecting the dial is generally acrylic, a common material for watches produced during this period. For collectors, the Reference 2540 appeals to those interested in Patek Philippe's less common case designs and the stylistic variations of the 1950s. Its square form factor, often complemented by unique lug designs, offers a distinct character. The reference contributes to a broader understanding of Patek Philippe's design evolution and its capacity for producing varied forms.

General population opinion versus collectors
Vintage Patek Philippe watch ref 2551 praised for elegance and style. Despite being undervalued, collector prefers its unique design, characterful dial, and classic movement over flashy modern pieces costing more.

The search is over, Patek 2599r Oscar Linke double signature
As a collector of double signed vintage pieces... it’s been a while, but I finally found an Oscar Linke double signed piece. Ref 2599 in rose gold, unbelievable mint condition.... hallmarks very visible, maybe it had one polishing since 1955? Anyway, I found it at a very small watch shop in Genova,

Ref2551
12-600 vs 27-460 In Nov 2013 I wrote an article about my final 12-600 acquisition. At that stage I had 5 12-600 but also had a ref 3433 which had a 27-460 movement rather than a 12-600, the equivalent watch being the 2551 Well after 4 years a 2551 has now materialised in my collection and I feel tha
