Description

Wow!! When was the last time you saw one of these pieces come up for sale. 93% Near Mint condition Patek Philippe Ref 3417. Calibre 27 AM 400 amagnetic; manual winding; date of mfg: 1964; 35mm Stainless Steel case with screwdown caseback. This particular piece was purchased by me from a reputable source. It went to Patek NYC and Patek Switzerland in 2011 for a complete overhaul. Watch was in service for over a year! NOS dial, hands, crown, and crystal. All Patek service paperwork will be provided, along with the Extract from the Archives. There is absolutely no risk here. You get to own/wear a vintage, rare timepiece that has been completely serviced and inspected by Patek Philippe. Watch will come with 90% shiny black alligator hand-made strap 18/14 120/75 from John Allen Woodward, with ss Patek tang buckle. Plain and simple - the movement is what makes this piece. The Ref 3417 was developed to withstand strong magnetic fields in laboratory settings. Along with Rolex, Omega, IWC, and Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Patek Ref 3417 were true scientist tool timepieces. "The reference 3417 is an anomaly of sorts for Patek. This anti-magnetic timepiece resembles a simple dress watch, of which Patek has made thousands in precious metals, but this one is cased in stainless steel. The watch itself was launched with an existing, manually wound caliber 12-400 in 1958, but by 1960, Patek had conceived what many believe to be the greatest movement ever made, the 27AM-400. This manually wound movement was shielded from electro- magnetic influence, due to an intermediary steel case back and an escapement made of nonmagnetic materials. Because of this, the reference 3417, with a stainless steel case more desirable and valuable than a Patek in a precious metal, and an elegant and innovative 27AM- 400 caliber, is one of the most interesting and sought- after watches to astute collectors today: It's an example of Patek's rare forays into the purpose-built tool watch category". - "Hodinkee" Asking $23,500, includes USPS Registered Mail with insurance. Only serious offers will be acknowledged. Wire only. Lots of references; email for additional scans/questions. Watch is located in CA-USA.

📖 About This Reference

The Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 3417 is notable for its antimagnetic properties, a feature less common in dress watches of its era. It represents a specific technical advancement within the Calatrava line, designed to protect the movement from magnetic fields, which could impair timekeeping accuracy. This focus on functional resilience distinguishes it from other Calatrava models primarily known for their aesthetic simplicity. The reference was produced in limited quantities, contributing to its specialized appeal. This reference typically features a 33 mm case, often in stainless steel, though examples in yellow gold are also known. It houses the manual-winding caliber 23-300 PM, a movement specifically engineered with antimagnetic components. The PM designation indicates "Protection Magnétique." The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal and offers a water resistance of 25 meters. The power reserve for this caliber is approximately 44 hours. The 3417 appeals to collectors interested in Patek Philippe's technical innovations and the brand's response to specific horological challenges. Its antimagnetic construction places it in a distinct category, offering a blend of classic Calatrava design with a practical, albeit subtle, complication. Variants exist with different dial configurations, including those with radium luminous material, further diversifying its collector interest.

Ref. 3417
Patek's 1958 antimagnetic watch features a soft iron cap to resist magnetic fields. Produced in stainless steel, it's considered a 'tool' watch. It had calibre 12-AM 400 until 1960, then upgraded to calibre 27-AM 400, boasting a power reserve of 40 hours.

Imagine the opening scene of a movie set . The location is the Hadron Collider in Switzerland. The actor is Benedict Cumberbatch playing the role of a scientist. He is wearing a crisp white lab coat. He walks into the lab and raises his arm and pulls back the sleeve of his coat. He looks at his watc
