Breguet Classique

You are looking at a Mint Condition Authentic BREGUET "Classique" wristwatch, Ref. 5140bA/29/9W6 in 18k yellow gold. This timepiece was sold by Boutique Breguet on Madison Avenue in New York on 01/21/09 and remains under the Breguet factory warranty until 01/21/11. The Breguet 5140 features the stunning oven-fired white enamel dial with hand painted Breguet style Arabic hour numerals, blued Breguet Hands, off-centered subdial for seconds at 5 o'clock, Breguet secret signature, and cambered scratch resistant sapphire crystal. Case diameter is 40 mm excluding the crown. It can be worn on casual occasions and to more formal events. The painted numerals are rendered in black and grey/silver ink. The Extra-thin (2.4 mm) self-winding mechanical movement with 35 jewels is automatic and the watch is water-resistant to 30 m or 100 feet. The 18k gold case back has engine turned decoration.

The Breguet 5140 was inspired by a famous Breguet pocket watch owned by James Watt, the Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer of the steam engine. Breguet manufactured the original pocket watch in 1804 and sold it to Watt on his trip to Paris on 14 Floreal, Year 12 (Frances's revolutionary calendar). Watt's watch is relatively plain and simple, but, to quote Michael Korda's "Marking Time," "exquisitely made and finished, a work of art as much as a watch. As for its mechanical perfection, it seems unlikely that Watt -- who in 1804 was already world famous for his invention -- would have gone to Breguet unless he was convinced that Breguet's watches were the finest and most advanced in the world -- as indeed they were at the time." (P. 179) The Breguet 5140 substitutes Breguet style Arabic numerals for the Romans on Watt's pocketwatch, but retains the simplicity of the dial, the offset sub-seconds dial, and the trademark Breguet coin edge detail to the side of the case.

There are no dings, dents, or scratches on case or crystal, only the usual faint marks on the bezel. The case back is protected by Breguet's clear seal. The strap is Breguet brown matte alligator, in new condition with the original yellow gold Breguet tang buckle. The dial, case, movement, and tang buckle are fully signed and hallmarked. The inner and outer boxes, manuals, hang tag, cert, and Bill of Sale are included and are in Mint Condition.
