If laser etching is difficult to make in production it might be a way to separate the original from the fakes.

Caseback
I believe you're referring to an engraving that Omega has started to put on some of its solid steel casebacks on its models. I believe it's done to deter counterfeiting and trafficing in fake Omegas. Regards DB Darien
