When this happens, I'd strap it on tight and use the 2nd hole instead of 3rd
Eventually, the strap or hole will stretch where it will fit more comfortably, unless it's way too tight on the 2nd hole. The area between the two holes is too small to punch a middle hole, so the only other way is to order a custom made strap tailored to your wrist size.
I don't believe Panerai can order you a non-punched hole strap but I guess it doesn't hurt asking.
And btw, I believe Panerai straps are made by Hirsh.

Anyone else feel that the standard leather strap is either too loose or too tight?

I've got the same problem but I know it's my wrist.....
it happens to me with almost all the other watches I own (Breguets, Blancpains, Glashuttes, Bvlgaris etc) so, it can't be the straps.. Cheers

... for a strap with no holes in it. Then go to a decent leather and ask for holes to be made so that it fits you perfectly. Remember that the leather strap will become more soft/flexible and though it will not change in length, it might still be that aft...
