Just for the record, the PAM009 PreA and PAM009A are vendome pieces

Nov 04, 2009,16:42 PM

Both the PAM009A as the PAM009 PreA where made by Vendome, not by Officine Panerai Spa. The last models produced by Officine Panerai Spa before the takeover of the watch division by the Vendome group where the models that started with the reference number 5218- e.g. 5218-209/A. Personally I like the PAM009 PreA and the PAM009A more then the crowded dial 317, but I do think both the A and PreA 009's are massively over priced at the moment for what they are.

I was chatting with a fellow Paneristi yesterday about the 317 as compared to a 9A . . .

They are, admittedly, COMPLETELY different watches. Nevertheless, assuming arguendo that the 317 and a pristine 9A (or pre-A) are the same price, which would you purchase and why? Note: you would be purchasing the watch to wear on a regular basis. PAM 317...

I think they are totally different watches but

for a daily wearer i would go for the 317 for the reasons that you already know. The 9 would be in the collection that you spend little time through out the year. alepos

IMO the 317 doesn't even come close

 By: Asimut : November 3rd, 2009-12:50
and I would choose a non pristine pre-A 9 for the same price point. The charisma and history of the 9 is hard to beat, while the 317 apart from being a very nice piece will not accelerate my heartbeat. My 2 Asi

Craig, for daily wear I'd pick the 317.

It's the reason my watch collection has never included any vintage pieces of any substance/value. I like to wear, and I just can't see wearing a 9A with any frequency. I figure $1000 per scratch! (Kidding, sort of.) And yes, I agree the 317 is cool, case ...

It depends on the reasons why you love Panerai, IMO.

 By: amanico : November 3rd, 2009-14:23
A true Paneristi will go on the 9, while a new Panerai lover would prefer the 317. The only legitim Chrono is the Mare. In house, you said? Damn, things have changed, in the Panerai House! To me, you got it, it is without any hesitations, the 9!!! Best, N...

Matey,

am I NOT 'true' panerai fan since I like them all for historical reasons AND horological advancement/evolution? :-( While I agree it's very unique that Panerai seems to have attracted two rather different types of collectors/customers at the same time, no...

Difficult to compare a Pam 9 with a 317, Jester

 By: amanico : November 3rd, 2009-22:36
LIke comparing an AM DB5 with a Peugeot 205 GTI... I didn't want to offend, I meant that the old school would prefer the 9A, yes, this is better said. Thanks for the correction. Best, Nicolas This message has been edited by amanico on 2009-11-03 22:37:58

Harsh

 By: grigo : November 3rd, 2009-22:45
Isn't it a little harsh to compare the 317 to a peugeot 205 GTI (even thought it might be a great young collector today). I mean manufactors evolve over time and produce new products over time and the newer pieces might be of better quality than previous ...

One is new, the other is old

 By: amanico : November 3rd, 2009-22:57
One has the charm of the tritium indexes and hands, and, on the Pre A, sublime numbers. The other, the 317 will never have this, big green lumi indexes, a cold " perfection " inherent to the new models. I loved the 205 GTI, much less capricious than the V...

Does the 317 really remind you of a Peugeot 205GTi???

 By: Jester : November 3rd, 2009-23:54
If anything I would put the analogy between PAM9A vs. PAM317 more like DB5 vs. DBS. Old school vs. latest technological breakthrough.

I would more see a Duometre, or a PP 5960 as a DBS

 By: amanico : November 4th, 2009-00:04
Than a 317.... Techically, nothing exceptional on the 317... But itr wasn't made for that, I guess. Best, Nicolas

I can see your point

 By: Jester : November 4th, 2009-00:26
when you compare the Calibre 2004 to likes of Duometre but again I'll still challenge you any day if you side the 317 w/ the 205GTi and I don't care how much you like the Peugeot!!!

The comparison points were about

Reliability and fun. As for the Peugeot 205 GTI, which didn't have a sophisitcated engine, but which offered a lot of fun, and reliability. Best, Nicolas

Excellent question, Sanro

 By: amanico : November 6th, 2009-09:03
Nothing is technically exceptional on the 9A, as well as on the Chrono. Panerai is not a brand know for its exceptional techniclaity, to me, but for its intelligent " Laboratorio de idees " concept. I mean, to make a reliable watch under any circumstances...

Fair answer Nico...

On my part, after more than a year and a half of wait for the not-so-unanimously-popular 317...I decided to indulge myself with a 29A. It got to me yesterday! A sweetener for the wait ;-)

Hey, Sanro, pics of it??? [nt]

Almost 13 years for the pre A which uses a Pre V dial, and 12 for the A... Best, Nicolas

Hey, Jester is old school

 By: Asimut : November 3rd, 2009-23:53
he is just moving forward while we are old geezers stuck in the past. The 317 is not completely detached from the past, but the pre-A 9 is pure DNA. It's strength is in the minimalistic and bold design. Asi

Thanks mate...

 By: Jester : November 4th, 2009-00:01
Actually I like them both. So technically I teleport between future & past constantly!

LOL, Asi and Jester...Excellent! [nt]

You need to give your teleporter to Nicolas

He's stuck in the past and doesn't seem to teleport to the future Cheers, Anthony

I will ask to Panerai to gift me one! :))) [nt]

Craig, after looking to your posts, I think

 By: patrickh : November 4th, 2009-03:18
you like much more complicated watches and to wear them regularly. Then, I really think that the new LE 330 units PAM 319 Luminor 1950 8 days RATTRAPANTE pink gold with brown dial will perfectly complete your collection. Just my thought, Cheers, patrickh

PAM 317

As you guys know seem to know so much about Panerai brand and PAM 317, I thought i will share with you all a Email reply received from Panerai :- " Sent: Tuesday, April 06, 2010 5:06 PM To: [Email address suppressed for privacy] Subject: RE: PAM 317 Dear ...

Dear VA, interesting answer. Could you please re-post it in a new topic

 By: patrickh : April 23rd, 2010-07:40
this post was old (end 2009) so many Purists will not going to read it. Luminor ceramic cases still live, whatever the version. Personally I had a 317 in hands and I am not fan of this model as the dial is too busy IMHO. 335 seems clearer, even if the cal...
