I find the issue not to be quite as black and white. Many watch manufacturers maintain great differences in their price levels within the same line, which is considered normal. Some also maintain fairly uniform looks between relatively entry level and fairly expensive pieces. Cartier comes to mind immediately, as do pieces with hidden complications such as tourbillons only visible movement side. Singling out Montblanc in my opinion does not present the whole story.
The main issue I guess is whether one wants instant signaling and recognition. With pieces that could cost a large multiple of what another piece from the same manufacturer costs this becomes more difficult for sure. Whether that’s a problem is of course for each prospective buyer to decide. Might be seen as a feature or as a downside, depending on perspective.
Another point might be the resale value, which admittedly for the Villeret pieces isn’t quite as good as one would hope. While certainly something to work on this appears to be an issue plaguing most watch brands, meaning there’s a certain disconnect between real demand at the prices asked for and supply. Somehow many players still hope that raising prices will not impact demand and are surprised when it does 😉
