"precious" doesn't necessarily reflect material value
Eventhough it is not "precious" in a monetary way, another interpretation is that the resin is "precious" because the product is proprietary to Montblanc and has been a rigorously guarded secret.
Perhaps it is also a psychological tool...if Montblanc tells me that my pens are made of precious resin, I will cherish them much more than others made of a petroleum byproduct even if the purchase price is the same.
