One question about modern manual movements...

 By: amanico : April 6th, 2011-08:37
This is a question I wanted to submit to your sagacity, a question I kept in my tortured mind for a long time. When we observe the current JLC collection, and especially the " affordable " category, we see that JLC offers a large offer of manual movements...

I have no preference. But I'm thinking of two possibilities.

 By: Ruckdee : April 6th, 2011-09:55
One is the jumping hour and minute watch like this IWC pocket watch. And another is an extremely long power reserve and extremely accurate watch like the Lange 31 but not necessarily that long. The JLC Master Fortnight, perhaps? Ruckdee...

Well, we have to keep in mind that ...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-03:12
JLC already has a superb manual movement in the Duometre... I fear that your 2 suggestions will be way above the budget. But, yes, there is something to work on, with these 2 ideas. Best, Nicolas.

A manual wind, round JLC in that...

 By: nwp627 : April 6th, 2011-12:03
...price range would beg for simplicity. A discrete power reserve with a see through back on a bracelet would be wonderful! (IMO) N

A power reserve indicator for a watch which would be around 50 hours of autonomy?

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-03:16
We already have that with the RDM... Which is an historical watch, but always was automatic. Adapting it on a manual movement? Would this be interesting? Wouldn't it be an heresy? Best, Nicolas.

I think that it would be a great idea

 By: grigo : April 6th, 2011-12:14
As to watch complication I am a very open minded person, but something that kept the dial simple. George

A good point, IMO.

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-03:23
Simple, yet elegant and very well finished... Why looking elsewhere? Best, Nicolas.

Less is More

 By: peregrino : April 6th, 2011-13:26
I would love to se a JLC alternative to the A. L&S Richard Lange or the iconic IWC Portuguese Jubilee from 1993. -round, 40 mm, thin bezel -manual winding -center or a generous small seconds hand -simplistic dial -huge balance, breguet overcoil -high prec...

Rob, you exactly pointed what I had in my mind when writing this post: GEOPHYSIC.

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-07:24
Ok, the Geophysic could fill the bill, in this category. A superb movement, nicely decorated AND finished. A sublime dial. A nice case, simple, yet elegant. Then, it would be a good start for some later developments, as to balance the offer between the Au...

Aahh, I know

 By: Starman : April 6th, 2011-14:02
That would be a 38 to 40 mm case, at least 10 mm thick, small (and I mean very small bezel), simple dial with small seconds hand at 6, silver or better enamel dial with applied numerals or printed romans 1 to 12, no date, slim hands (leaf-style?) and a hi...

We are not used to it ...

By: Mark in Paris : April 6th, 2011-14:03
... from JLC. I mean as you said, in the 5-15 K€ range, the "rounds" are only automatic. I guess that in this area the "automatic" function is something considered as a +, particularly when you compare to other brands (like Omega or IWC for example). I le...

You got it very well...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-07:52
If the movement is nicely finished, well, yo say it in a trivial way " if there is something to see ", yes, it is, IMO, justified to get a manual movement in this range of price ( 6/ 12 K euros is some serious money, by the way ). In this case, I woilmdn'...

I would love to see

 By: aaronm : April 6th, 2011-14:10
a base movement with a slightly-longer power reserve (maybe about 72 hours) that could drive some small complications. JLC has done good things with their automatic base calibers and the master-8-day movement, but that is one big movement to add complicat...

Or some modern refinements, including some of the ...

Solutions of the Extreme Lab One, with a nice degre of finish... Best, Aaron. Nicolas.

My wish…

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 6th, 2011-15:24
My wish would be a “Tribute” to the Master Memovox Cal 914. Am I predictable? YES! A 38-40mm Memovox with manual movement (chronometer?!), open case back with nice finish on the movement. Complications? Well, as mentioned – Memovox. An extra bonus would b...

couldn't agree more with Blomman. Love everything about master memovox manual winding

 By: Yong AMG : April 7th, 2011-04:52
I wish JLC really consider reissue this watch.

The only “downside”…

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 7th, 2011-12:43
IMO, is the size – it’s a tad small in today’s fashion… Best Blomman

YEP, Blomman - I LIKE that ! :))

 By: hs111 : April 7th, 2011-05:57
Or is it asking too much ? - don't forget, Nicolas had set the price-range between 7 - 15 k - well, that should be ok, ahh yes - don't make the case too big, pls and have nice hands & lugs, AND: Material: ss and/or WG .. thanks for making the thoughts wan...

He, he… :)

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 7th, 2011-12:54
You’re in on this one, HS? Yes, the prize span is a bit of a pickle… But, IF JLC decides to make a Memo like this – the I will continue my noodle diet a couple of years… It would be worth it! Best Blomman

God I LOVE that piece!!!!

 By: watchme : April 7th, 2011-06:17
Especially with the exhibition back for the alarm (the loudest JLC ever produced, IIRC. -Dean

Thank you, Dean! :)

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 7th, 2011-13:00
So, would you join if JLC made a new version of this one? Best Blomman

I would love to see that, Blomman.

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-08:02
Like you, I'm totally crazy about the Memovoxes in general, and speically when it comes to this example. BUT.... Can't we do / wish better? What would you think of a Duometre à Alarme? With an Alarm ringing like the U.N Sonata, which means like a Minute R...

Sounds exciting .. But expensive - no ?

 By: hs111 : April 7th, 2011-08:13
Not an expert in Duometre ( improving soon, maybe..), - but quite a fascinating concept .. All the precision, but also a new family member to the famous "2 D's" : - and a 'relative' to Memovox AND ( almost ) a Repeater, did I get that correctly ? - Intrui...

It will certainly go over 15 K Euros, for sure.

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-08:17
But it may be around 30 K Euros, depending of the level of sophistication and of the color of gold used for the case... But we're speaking about an " Ultimate " Alarm watch, here. Best, Nicolas.

A Duometre à Alarme?!

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 7th, 2011-13:08
Aj, aj, aj, aj, aj…! I would love that ! But I fear I would have to eat noodles for the rest of my life... Or sell a kidney! My problem is that one of my kidneys is already booked for a JLC Minute Repeater… Hm, is it possible to live without any kidneys.....

Come on, my friend, you know the solution...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-13:40
You sell some of your watches, you put some order in your collection, you get some money, and make some sacrifices. For a Duometre à Alarme, I would do it! Without any doubt. And you don't know it yet, but you will do the same, because, like me, you're co...

I know, I know…

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 7th, 2011-13:47
You are right, my friend! But it hurt just to think about letting go of some of my watches… Best Blomman

Mm, I already prepared a post about this... :( [nt]

Well, gentlemen , I can let you know: Blomman, FYI: - one kidney , no problem - no kidney, very difficult BUT: as long as you have a good heart for Vla, And a free spot on your neck .. Nevertheless, my Watson-spirit inside can relate to this, Pity is , I ...

Totally agree.

 By: VMM : April 7th, 2011-10:14
It was one of my fav "affordable" watches long time ago. I was about to buy it many time, now I regret not to do it. Great idea, blomman. Vte

You should think about getting it again?!

By: blomman Mr Blue : April 7th, 2011-13:14
The still pops up from time to time! Thank you, Vte! Best Blomman

I count you in, Andy! :) [nt]

I would love to see a new manual Time Only Chronometer with central seconds. We'll leave it JLC to deliver a classic design that oozes elegance - 39.5 mm x 9 mm please and offered in steel, RG and WG or PT with a black face. Okay, now I'm just being overl...

Greediness is good.

Mostly when it comes with such a great taste. Refined dial, case and movement... That sounds familiar to me. Best, Nicolas.

Well, I like all the ideas so far

 By: respo : April 6th, 2011-19:11
Blomman's idea for the Memovox is a good one because the alarm is one of JLC's most defining complications. But I guess I would like to see something along the lines of the Master Ultra Thin 38, but perhaps with a new movement more aligned with the size o...

A manual wind master chronograph

 By: foowy : April 6th, 2011-20:54
witha display caseback for me please. Or just a simple 3 hand watch (blue steeled hour, minute and second hand) with long power reserve. With the power reserve displayed at the back.

Manual wind Master Chronograph...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-08:11
The problem is that JLC already has a superb manual Chronograph in the collection: The Duometre. But why not, if they release a ... Rattrapante??? Your second soultion would be wiser, but not less appealing, in my opinion. Thanks for your input! Best, Nic...

Duometre being the ultimate JLCchrono...

 By: foowy : April 7th, 2011-09:06
but it wouldnt fit the 7-12k euro price range. so i would have to settle for next best....but in hindsight, i think i agree with you to go with my second choice. I totally forgot about the AMOVX2 chrono...so no need for a master chrono, i am equally happy...

That is why I excluded the manual chrono....

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-09:20
It would generate a serious " traffic jam "... Unless we have what still misses in the family of the JLC Chronos: a Rattrapante. Let's go for the 2d solution. Best, Nicolas.

Manual slow-beat movements

 By: forumadmirer : April 6th, 2011-21:08
with whatever complication, or no complication at all.

Well, I could not ask for anything more...

Thank you, Nicolas!

He He, Dean...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-08:24
What about a Triple Date moonphase, animated by a delicious manual movement? I fear that on such a watch, the power reserve indicator is ruining a bit the pure symmetry of the dial. That may indeed be a solution... As for the SIHH novelties, I will post o...

Well, Nico, I've loved the Master Calendar for years...

 By: watchme : April 7th, 2011-08:43
especially after I sold my Master Moon. If the Master Calendar's bezel was thinned, and the profile reduced by half, I think we'd have an absolute winner! -Dean

Sure, but not 34mm. I think...

 By: watchme : April 8th, 2011-08:04
39-42 is the "sweet spot." -Dean

Sure, 35 mm will only please to some Vintage Watch Nuts.

 By: amanico : April 8th, 2011-09:51
As for the Geophysic, I'd say 37 / 39 would be the ideal size, if we want to keep its characteristic appeal. 40 mm, with the important aperture of the dial, will make it look like a IWC Portuguese... Best, Nicolas.

Not to add, but to echo...

 By: KenMNYC : April 7th, 2011-07:53
Mr. Bloman is on the right track with an updated Master Memovox. Perhaps the larger, more refined case form, but otherwise, don't change a thing. As well, I think a "Calatrava" style center seconds, no date model with a little more heft than the ultra thi...

As for the Memovox, as suggested by Blomman, see my answer to him...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-08:26
As for a Geophysic, I think it would be a great start to inaugurate a new family of manual winiding movements, YES! Best, Ken. Nicolas.

Yes, please! :)

So, THAT would be a tough choice: - the 'Blomman' MMV - type suggestion vs a TT Geophysic.. ( maybe some would even say: Don't touch one grail ..) Thank you for reminding us, Nice to have many avenues to explore .. Best, hs

This is what I have been hoping for for a few years

 By: Robert206 : April 7th, 2011-10:24
In fact it was a "wish" I'd posted in another website's JLC forum that we're all familiar with a while back. My want: A manual wind Master 8-Days with - 37mm - 39mm diameter, reasonably substantial casework [not to heavy, not too dainty] - Dauphine hands ...

You were not that far ...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-10:31
There was a Master 8 Days in SS with a black dial, in a not too distant past. The case was 41, 5 mm big, and the P.R indicator was on the dial. So you weren't too far from your ideal. Best, Nicolas. This message has been edited by amanico on 2011-04-07 10...

Really? With out the "big" date, night/day, and other such distractions?

 By: Robert206 : April 7th, 2011-12:07
If anyone has a picture I'd love to see.

Naaah. Sorry for not having been clear.

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-13:48
The 8 Days you know, but with a black dial. Now, I see what you wish... Hmmm, that may be a good plan! Best, Nicolas.

I would like to see...

 By: foversta : April 7th, 2011-12:36
...a low frequency movement (2,5hz) with a large diameter and a large balance wheel: in a few words, a movement inspired inspired by the chronometric movements of the past. Complications ? No, no, a big central second would be the only one ! Fx

I'd like to see a Tribute to the Geophysic....

 By: playtime : April 7th, 2011-14:27
maybe one that is 39-40mm in size, Chronometer quality, with a movement that takes its cues from the spirit of Dufour. And no more than $10,000USD. preferably at $7500.00. Made in steel, and platinum edition for Vlad

Well, if we could have the same quality of finish and decoration ...

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2011-21:39
Of the Gepohysic, for the new manual movement, that would be greatissime. No need to go " ala Dufour ". TT Geophysic... That sounds very promising! Best, Nicolas.

Maybe there's a reason why it's "limited" to simple pieces...

 By: Echi : April 7th, 2011-21:10
because it might become too cumbersome to implement it on pieces that have complications that will benefit from having a winder. I'm almost of the opinion that a chronograph (ala moonwatch) would be the most "sensible" if you want to go complicated... and...
