... fewer black pieces, so I have read, making them a little more rare. The blue dial is very distinctive and quite different than other IWC blue dial watches that I have stumbled across over the years. I wonder if they have used the same color dial/process, elsewhere?

Yeah the blue color is mat and not sunburst like the newer models.
I honestly prefer the mat blue. Looks better especially on BPs. Sunburst isn’t much my thing. They made 500pcs split between blue and black ones. I’d go blue everyday and twice on weekends

A total of 499 were actually made: 386 in blue and 113 in black.
Only 113 in black? Anyway I personally find it useless.
If you’re going black then better buy the steel version and save the extra dough. Just my 2 cents
