Had an enjoyable morning with IWC earlier today.

Along with my local AD they ran a course for 8 of us which involved the disassembly and reassembly of the barrel and going works of an IWC cal 88 movement. We spent around 3 hours under the careful eye of a visiting watchmaker on this. After successfully completing the exercise (with no bits left over 🤣)  which was pretty rudimentary, I have a new found appreciation for watch assemblers, never mind watchmakers.

I’ve seen some excellent online graphics and visuals on the subject, but getting your hands into the mechanism and attempting to seat wheels and bridges gives a tactile appreciation that can’t be matched.

Providing the small torque to the minute wheel to drive the balance wheel (sans barrel) made me feel like a kid in the schoolyard - magical!  Good to see the movement running at the end of the exercise.

Many thanks to the team from IWC and my local AD for putting on this event. 😊

Watchmaking requires patience and manual dexterity, two things I don’t have.🥴

Thanks.

Not sure that I have them to the extent required either. But it was a great experience nevertheless.

Great post and GREAT experience

Nothing like having a movement come to life I’m impressed that you didn’t have any parts left over

Thanks.

I’ve had this link for a few years now which is the best I’ve seen anywhere. I’ve passed it on to a number of people in the trade who have used it for educational purposes in sales staff training. It was really useful to have the background education for...

Very impressive and good job!
