Pin Wheel escapement

Hi Nick,

I am always happy to answer good questions.

This escapement is unusual in that the pallets are fitted directly to the suspension spring avoiding losses via  a crutch, the impulse
is given directly to the pendulum.  The set screw on the long pallet arm is for adjusting the locking, the best French makers always
fitted an adjusting screw to the Pin Wheel escapement but very few ever jeweled the pallets.

The three screws at the top of each suspension are a very clever ( and complicated) device by Breguet for first setting the beat and
then locking the beat set screw in tension,
They are not part of the gimbal system.

Placing the pallets directly on the suspension is very rare, perhaps because of the difficulties of making and solid clamping of the
pallets to the lower chops of the suspension spring.
Much later towards the end of the 19th century Riefler developed an escapement that did not use a crutch and directly impulsed
the pendulum via the suspension spring, this was used on his very successful regulators that were fitted in vacuum tanks.
