Personally, I only care about the end product.

 

When I end up purchasing from an independent, it's usually to quench the thirst for something very very specific at a certain quality level.


don't care how handcrafted something is, and I don't really care how many hours went into it. Having run a ton of consumer brands including a few vertically integrated ones - one of which is in jewelry - there is no correlation between automation levels, hours per unit, and quality. If someone can figure out how to deliver a higher quality product for less money, they shouldn't be punished for it! With watches specifically, the makers that have touted doing extensive hand work have objectively bad quality. I think Roger Smith is a good example:
