This new arrival was one of the summer’s “Bring On The Colors!” releases. Available in six dial colors, 22 pieces in each color, 38.5 mm, manual movement.
I wanted something bright and cheery for these dreary times, and I’d also wanted a Nomos watch for years, so I chose the yellow with white numerals and markers. Well, I didn’t really choose it; all the other colors had sold out! On the positive side, the yellow was my second choice anyway.
The watch was delivered this morning, and I’m a bit disappointed. The major issue for me is legibility. The dial photographed beautifully but misleadingly, with deceptively clear contrast between the yellow dial and the white hour markers. That is true even in my own photos, attached. But in real life the hour numerals and markers are virtually invisible. The dial looks to the naked eye like a solid yellow disc with no markers at all! If only the designers had used a dark outline color, instead of pink, the numerals and markers would be highly visible. Luckily, the three polished steel hands are discernible.
Pluses: The yellow color is a beautiful shade. The 38.5 size, with low profile, is very wearable for my 7.5 inch (roundish rather than flat) wrist. The fabric strap is very supple and comfortable. Solid caseback is good. Nomos’ customer service was excellent: They quickly answered my questions about the strap length and the production schedule. The price was very reasonable.
Minuses: Near-invisible numerals and markers. The flat crystal produces reflections like crazy. The light gray fabric strap is a poor choice — charcoal gray or blue or medium brown would be more appealing to set off the yellow dial.
Verdict: A light-hearted, very informal, very comfortable watch with one irritating shortcoming.
