Independents Please Don't Forget It's Still About the Watch
While I marvel every day at the new innovations, the beauty, the fire, spirit and the rarity of independent brands - it is their product that I wear and use.
As a new entrant to the world independents, I never saw the point in them until i bought my first. Now I have more. And will continue this journey.
But beyond the brand story, the person or his fire - it is still all about the product. And that people wear them, cherish them, and it becomes a fragment of one's soul.
And I've learned that there are independent watchmakers, and then there are independent watchmakers.
That some adhere to the highest standards that tradition calls for. And some who are visionaries that pull together the best of the best, to deliver the best of the best.
And then there are some, that claim a focus on innovation, but without the same focus on the quality of the product, or for that matter listening to the customer.
I have never returned a watch before, and i just did. Now imagine if this was my first experience with independents.
I would have been discouraged, saddened, and driven back to the cold but safe embrace of the conglomerates.
There's a reason why a samurai sword - single bladed and simple, is more precious than a Leatherman.

i would never return a watch just because it broke down. no it's much more than that it went back, it came back, and the dial was changed without any forewarning. the case had scratches in place where there weren't before. i shan't go on

...as it isn't gentlemanly. Obviously the watchmaker offered to rectify it and I thank him for that. But I've lost faith. You send it back, and it comes back looking totally different (and uglier imho), with more mistakes. to be colloquial: where got such...
by the way ...
A watchmaker is a person who can actually make a watch, although he may leave some or most of the work to others. That requires hands-on experience and not just the ability to program a machine or come up with a design. amerix

my initial issue was quite straightforward really: - watch didn't run after a couple of days of purchase; dust under dial; toolmark on chapter ring; slightly misaligned case-to-dial - sent watch back immediately for overhaul - initial promised return date...
