I agree with your perception.

 

I think the smaller version is aesthetically more balanced to my eye.

Also, since I do wear and maintain some small watches, I find that there is a possibility that the awareness of the small sized watch for gentlemen may return, even within a decade. It is something like shoes with laces...there was a time in the 70s to 80s when it sort of almost dissappeared from the mainstream...and then.
