Frères Rochat at BaselWorld 2013
The house Frères Rochat is letting a very particular know-how flower again 200 years after its first blooming. Coming from a family of very specialised watchmakers in the Vallé de Joux the Frères Rochat opened their first shop in Geneva selling their singing bird automata in 1813. During the middle of the 19th century the Frères Rochat were the uncontested kings of singing bird automata.
Now in 2013 the singing bird automata are being built again. The
movement is completely new, developed by the house Christophe Claret in
Le Locle with over 1200 parts. The movement is, however, largely inspired by the movements
from 200 years ago. Frères Rochat is heading into a very stratospheric
market with these automatons and is pursuing the decorative crafts to
make a corresponding product.
Take a look at the pictures and
take in the video. The piece is fascinating and beautifully made. It
is a proof of real technical and decorative mastery and was working
perfectly at the fair.
I still have a problem with these automata. I just open the door and hear the real thing.
