many watch "companies" were breaking into China including Bovet's old boss (Magniac), Ullmann and Vacheron & Constantin (1820).
Ed.Bovet was sent to China earlier in 1818 but he was not representing Bovet company yet as it was not founded until 1822.
VC was about 2 years earlier into China than Bovet as a company and sold mainly to the Imperial north (Emperors Qianlong and Jiaquing) whereas Bovet sold in the prosperous south (Canton and Macau). Bovet sold to the masses of middle class and merchants. I guess that for mechanical watches of the time in China, Bovet was the Rolex of his day!
